solitude mountain resort

Every February we spend one week in Utah skiing and snowboarding which is always a good time. We typically visit Powder, Snow Bird, Brighton and Solitude. Without exception, year after year we find the skiing and boarding to be superior at Solitude!,, Challenging runs, technical black diamonds and plenty of steep drops. It's a scenic resort with fast lifts. Save sometime go straight to Solitude!

1) The resort: It is a small resort with a choice of hotel or condo accommodations. Originally I was concerned with getting the condos closest to the lifts. That was unnecessary because all of the buildings are relatively close. All of the employees that we encountered were excellent. 2) Dining: Although limited to just a few choices, the food is very good but priced as you would expect at a resort. The pizza made to order at the Stone Haus Pizzeria & Creamery was very tasty and not greasy at all. Do expect to pay $15-$20 for a 10" pizza. For fine dining, I highly recommend St. Bernard's. For a bar/pub atmosphere, grab a beer at the Thirsty Squirrel. For a more sophisticated / romantic drink, peruse The Library located at the Inn at Solitude. Be sure to have Dax make you a Black Cherry Sour and tell him I sent you !!3) Ski/Snowboarding School- the instructors were excellent and patient. Unfortunately, the rule for snowboarding is not 3 days and you will have it mastered which was very frustrating for my teenage son. I discovered from talking to others that the 3-day rule really only applied to skiing and that for snowboarding it takes 5-6 times. 4) The skiing - very good during the week. It was a little crowded during the weekend but during the week you could easily have the run to yourself! My husband was disappointed that there was no night skiing as the hours are from 9am - 4 pm. There are some good long green runs and plenty of blacks. 5) Suggestions: A). Stop while you are "in town" and get. The basic milk, OJ, cokes, pop tarts, snacks etc. The sodas are $3, $3.25 with tax. A little much if you ask me, but they charge what they can get.B) Watch the Avalanche dog rescue demo if you get a chance. It is very interesting. You can also get a chance to meet one of the rescue dogs at the Thirsty Squirrel after the runs are closed. C) There is a shuttle bus that goes back and forth between the Villages and moonbeam. Some times it takes awhile for the shuttle to appear.

This was our first time skiing in Utah after a few trips to Colorado.Although it has the feel of a smaller mountain, the overall experience is terrific. Lines were non-existent on Friday and lasted only minutes on Saturday morning, freeing up again in the afternoon.Some runs were a bit narrow for icy conditions early in the morning, but with additional snow fall they were fine. Staff was very friendly in the rental shop, at the lifts and in the pool building.Condos were easily walkable to the slope, making a lunch break quick and restful.Overall a very nice experience and much easier than traveling from Denver.

My husband and I took a quick four-day vacation to Solitude and had a fabulous time. We are New Yorkers who have never been to the West to ski. Brought our helmets and boots and rented demo skis at the location for three days of skiing. It seems as though the snow followed us from New York to Solitude, who has had a lower-than-normal snowfall season. First day, there was a bit of ice, but as we're used to it, it was really no big deal for us. When the snow came for our last two days, WOW, what a difference. Was glad I had proper skis rather than my "East coast" narrower skis. Altitude had some effect on our stamina and a slight headache, perhaps because we live at 47' above sea level, lol.Monday, March 2 was completely empty on the slopes and the snow kept on coming. What a great experience! We were perfectly suited for Solitude, because we just love to ski, relax, and rest. Busy, crowded, loud places aren't really all that appealing, so this was just perfect.Lodging and dining will be reviewed separately.

The skiing was great and a multitude of runs at all levels. Great lodging, restaurants and felt perfectly safe letting our pre-teens roam on their own. Staff was very hospitable across the entire resort. Tip for multi-day skiers - take a cab from SLC airport - much less expensive than renting a car! Once you are at the resort, there is no need for the car anyhow.

This year is not good for snow, but Solitude grooms so well, you hardly notice it at all! Enough blue runs to keep us occupied all day, and several high speed chairs, but the slower double chairs were kinds scary. Loved not waiting in line, EVER!

This was our second trip back to Solitude. This trip was with our extended family (a total of 7 in a wonderful 3 BR condo with great views of the slopes). The weather was most unusual (temps in the 40's and 50's in early February) with Springlike skiing, but we all had a lot of fun during our weeklong stay.I have only one challenge for the management at Solitude, since we love ALMOST everything about the place except for this one aspect. While we love the trail layout and the fact that all trails are north facing (excellent snow quality all the time), the lift layout is one of the most "gerrymandered" in the Rockies for a major resort. Perhaps with Deer Valley's involvement going forward this will be addressed. In order to get around the resort one has to take a variety of lifts and even experience some pretty flat terrain. Re-aligning the lift structure (and adding another high speed quad to replace the extremely slow Sunrise lift) would go a very long ways to turn this gem into a nearly perfect place.

This was our first family ski trip and my first time skiing in about 16 years. The resort was beautiful, like being in an alpine village. Totally recommend renting a condo (VRBO.com) so that you can prepare your own meals, the food gets expensive up there. Employees were fabulous, any issues were Quickly resolved. The Ski Academy teachers and helpers were beyond compare as they had my boys up and going in just and afternoon (they had never seen snow before). They even helped with my wife who was seriously afraid of the ski lifts. All fears were conquered and now we are planning our return trip to the resort next year!

My husband and I spent a great five day honeymoon at Solitude Mountain. We enjoyed snowshoeing on the easily accessible and beautiful trails that connect Solitude Mountain with the Nordic Center. We found the food excellent, the service consistently friendly and professional, and drank the best marguerites of all time! (In Utah -- who would have thought?) There is a range of accommodations-- look for a unit with a view. That is the only thing we would have done differently.

I spent a Saturday skiing at the Solitude Ski Resort just because I had never visited before. I was prepared to spend a lot of time waiting in line because it was a busy weekend. I was pleasantly surprised that there were no lines, I never had more than a three or four people in front of me at any of the lifts.When I visited, there had not been any snow for a few weeks so powder was out of the question but I found that the resort had worked hard to provide well groomed trails and slopes. Natives to the area might complain about the hard packed powder but I am from the East and ski that type of snow regularly so I thought the skiing was great. I thought there was a good mix of green, blue and black diamond trails where everybody but perhaps the most expert skiers would have a good time. A few of the more difficult areas were closed because of the lack of snow. I thought this resort had a great family feel, more so than other ski areas over in Little Cottonwood canyon that I have visited. I saw many dads taking their pre-teen sons and daughters skiing with them. I brought a brown-bag lunch so I didn't use any of the restaurants on the hill so I cannot provide a review of the eating establishments. It was such a nice day that I just found a nice spot up on the mountain with a view and sat down to eat my lunch under the bright sun.I found other skiers, lift operators and other personnel to be friendly and helpful. I stayed on the mountain until the middle of the afternoon and was able to ski most of the trails. I had a good time skiing the trails at Solitude and will definitely visit again when I am in the area.

This resort is great because there are not many people here. I never had to wait in line at the lifts. It is a little smaller so not as many areas for a beginner skier.

Me and my wife visit this place for a skiing day and was fabulous. Was a great cold day (Sunny) ideal for skiing. Was our first time so we choose to use the beginners run with was really good to learn. they are not a huge resort but has a lot of runs for experienced and not experienced skiers. Good service and great attention. Recommended!!

An excellent ski resort with great runs, powder, friendly staff and amenities. For our group, the fact it is quiet after hours was a bonus - we were there to ski not to party on. i will definitely be back one day.

Had a great day at this mid size resort. Very pleased we visited after skiing all of the other local places. Despite a few areas with thin cover, we found plenty of nice cruisers and a nice mix of more difficult terrain. Most of the tree stuff was hardly touched! We had the place to ourselves. Yes, it was the Monday following the Super Bowl so perhaps your experience may vary. With soo much discussion about the differing "Vibe" between Alta vs Snowbird, we simply enjoyed this place for the pure Solitude!

I am probably considered an intermediate skier. I've skiid for years but haven't been often over the last 7 or 8 years. I went with someone who is a brand new skier so we bought a beginners pass that gives access to 3 runs for about $58 dollars. We went on Martin Luther King day and had excellent and beautiful conditions. Also, the resort was not super busy, which was very nice! Even though it was just a beginners pass, we still had access to a lot of blue runs and even a few black diamonds. It was a great day and a great value!
