This course is amazing. Very playable, but challenging and fair, and great views! Greens roll fast and true. Best course in the area! Must play!!!!
I understand Ken's review. My hubby & I golfed Coral Canyon on Nov 7/14 and we were paired with a "minor investor" in the course. It took 5 hours and 20 minutes to play. That is inexcusable in my book. When riding a power cart a course like this should be able to be played in under 4 1/2 hours. There was apparently a small tournament (32 people) out before us and it was unbelievably slow. On the 16th holes the marshall stopped to talk and said he asked the groups ahead to play a bit faster. I'm thinking on 17 you asked them to play faster.......where the hell were you on the front 9? Never saw him. The GPS on our cart said we were 36minutes behind. If they don't improve the "golfing experience" they won't survive.
There is an old saying in golf, "It's not the arrow, it's the Indian", meaning don't blame the golf club for your bad shot. In a similar way I would say, "Don't blame the computer, blame the human programming the computer."When our three couples arrived at the golf course we were immediately forewarned they were half an hour behind schedule. We arrived at 8:30 am for a 9:00 am tee time. Come to find out their on-line computer system was taking tee times starting at 6:48 am when sunrise this time of year was 7:30 am. There is a small clubhouse and an even smaller staging area for golfers to wait until their tee time is called. On this particular day, with such a computer backup, there were golfers all over the place trying to use the practice range, parking carts that prevented other carts getting by, running out of buckets to take to the driving range. One guy in the clubhouse taking money, making apologies, answering the phone. Two guys in the parking lot trying to pick golfers up at their cars, retrieving plastic buckets from the driving range, sending golfers up to the starter. When we were called to the first tee we found ourselves third in line. They wanted us to take the obligatory group photo so the course could make a little more money. But then we were forced to wait, and wait, and wait for the other groups to tee off. When the group ahead of us teed off, we discovered they were a fivesome. I asked the starter if that was their standard practice, to allow fivesomes to go out? He said no, but these guys were "investors," (whatever that meant). Already a hole behind making the turn at 10, we asked the fivesome if our two groups of three could play through. Nope, they told us, they were just "loading up more beers" after which they proceeded to get further and further behind looking for their errant shots in the brush with their beers, cigars and lack of consideration. Even with the late start, our round still lasted six hours. A terrible decision made by the golf course. Ironically the next day, while sitting at the bar at Falcon Ridge Golf Course in Mesquite, Nevada, we found out that Coral Canyon was managed by the same golf management company. Even more ironic, the general manager for Coral Canyon was at Falcon Ridge, and admitted he had been at Coral Canyon the day before when the disaster was going on. After a large apology he asked us for details of our experience. He also told us that the time difference between Nevada and Utah was not factored into a computer system that takes reservations for four Nevada courses, but only Coral Canyon in Utah. He assured us that it would never happen again and requested we give the course a second chance. It would be hard to believe we would. Coral Canyon not only had the computer mistake, they had the starter sending out a fivesome (to the detriment of not only our two threesomes but presumably all the other groups that were behind us) and the understaffing that resulted in chaos around the clubhouse even before we could get on the course. Ah, what about the golf course? It was fine but had some tricky scrub areas that bisected the course almost like a burn on a links course. They were in the process of reseeding some tee boxes so blues and whites were together and some reds the gals were playing were created in the fairway making the distances on the scorecards meaningless. But honestly, after the debacle at the beginning, after finding ourselves waiting on every hole, the course could have been Pebble Beach and I wouldn't have noticed the ocean I was so blinded by the mistakes made earlier. The general manager said it was just a bad day. I will never know because I don't intend to go back for fear it will happen again.
Played course for first time , nice layout. The greens were in great shape the rst off the course could use a little manicure work. Hard to tell where the fairway ended and the rough began. Fairway needed cutting . Gps is weak many shots needed to be played and not knowing course the yardage was hard to figure. Especially for carry over many waste areas.Layout was good,.Starter did not give us much info as to the course , playability etc. The length of the course was very manageable from the blue and forward tees.Tuesday off to sand hollow
A really nice course. The greens and fairways were in excellent shape. Some holes require a layup off the tee unless you bomb your drives. So the first time around the course may result in some lost balls with the driver. The fairways are fairly wide and the greens are large. This course is not as scenic as Sand Hollow, but it has some views of the mountains and a good course to play when you are in the area. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely play again.
We were staying in Mesquite Nevada and drove to Utah to play golf at Sand Hollow but decided to also play Coral Canyon. This course was just the opposite for creature comforts that Sand Hollow failed to provide. The fairways were watered, there were small cooers on all the carts, the rangers came around with wet cool towels (temp was in 100"s) and there were coolers on the course that actually had water in them. There were 8 of us and we all agreed that Coral Canyon was due a revisit as the course was beautiful and fun to play.
Amazing! Greens fantastic and great layout. Really good customer service. I played when the rates just changed and it is a great value. Even during peak season the value is outstanding. Have to play if your in the area.
I did not pay full price, and if I had, I would have been disappointed in what I got for my money. I liked the course layout a lot, and in general the course was in decent shape. The greens, especially on the par threes were pretty torn up. It was also very windy the day I played which I will admit made it difficult to really judge the course. Nice location, nice layout, nice views. Overall good, but not one of the best I have played.Last note, I'd play it again. In fact I'd play it several times, but I would never shell out a hundred bucks for it. I've played a lot of golf courses. I've played 36 a day on several of the Robert Trent Jones Courses in Alabama which are in my opinion better courses, and the rack rate for 36 was cheaper than the rack rate at Coral Canyon for 18.
We have played Coral Canyon since it opened and have alway loved the place, but this year it was very disappointmenting because the conditon of the course was way below what we were used to.the staff was great hope to hear why it was in poor shape.
This course is the best course in Southern Utah! The layout is amazing and very playable for all! Go play you will not be disappointed. Greens are always good and smooth!
Played Coral Canyon on March 4th 2014. It is in HORRIBLE condition. THe Dixie Hills City Course was mile ahead of Coral. The tee boxes were a flat out joke. Greens were hairy and the slowest ot the 5 courses we played. Lots of bare and dead spots. We played lots of courses and it is the only one where we had to play "winter rules" in the fairway.Charged us 80 bucks cause we have the Dixie Direct card and still feel like we payed 3 times to much. No cart girl ever stopped by. Wont play there again. Sand Hollow, Green Springs, city Muni all are way better condition and are cheaper.
We played this beautiful course last year in February and were looking foreword to playing it again this year. But, yesterday, we found the overall course to be in very poor condition. The fairways were ragged with very thin lies and multiple bare spots. I'm embarrassed to say that ball movement was required just to get playable grass under the ball rather than hard soil between lumps of grass. Additionally, the greens were very bumpy and weren't rolling true. For a course that is 2-4 times as expensive as surrounding courses that are in much better shape, we would have expected much more from Coral Canyon. We won't be back until we the course conditions are returned to its former playability.
Played this course last week and found conditions to be quite disappointing. Greens were rough and very slow. Fairways were rough. A lot of damage, ie mud, washed out cart paths, debris, etc... that I was told occured during heavy rains back in November. I was charged full price ($107.00) and no mention was ever made of poor course conditions. Also played Sand Hollow and Sky Mountain and conditions at those courses were much better and the rates were lower. Coral Canyon has been a favorite for several years, but the courseneeds immediate attention.
The course is always in very good condition (have played it the past eight years when visiting St. George). The holes are varied and you will use every club in tour bag. Several of the par 5's can be reached in two shots. The greens are undulated and tiered along with being very quick so bring your A-putting. Play the white tees unless you are a low single digit handicap. Great views and many elevation changes, best conditioned public course in the St. George/Washington area.
We have had thunderstorms within the last few days and the course had a few places that were muddy. The staff pointed these out to us and there was no problem. Due to the wetness mowing wasn't done. This was not a real problem and we found our balls that were in the rough. I thought they had done a great job cleaning up and the course will be in great shape in a few days. Play time was good, this has been a problem in the past.
