Redrock astronomy did a great job with the tour. Alex was a great guide, very informative and entertaining. We have done this twice now, I do like the location north of town better than the location south of town. There was less traffic going by at the north location.
My kids are learning about astronomy in school and I'm glad that Alex made time for us. His quality telescope was neat to use and the evening was informative.
Red Rock Astronomy did a program for our group event in Moab and it was really fun to look at the stars and learn about Astronomy. Thanks for the great program.
Seeing the dark skies of Utah is amazing..adding a little bit of information makes it super amazing...my biggest beef is that the location was just off a road with lots of cars and too much "viewing" of less interesting stuff...still it was fun
I welcome when someone makes a comment such as this every few years as it give me an opportunity to explain what type of program I offer. My program is intended for all age groups as educational, but also designed to be entertaining as well. It is oriented towards folks that want to go past the everyday constellation type program that is available free at many National/State Parks and planetariums. My program is primarily telescope viewing with question & answer discussion on objects we are viewing and other guest generated astronomy subjects. We view a number of different objects, usually the best ones available to us in the sky at the time, i.e., clusters, nebulae, galaxies, and whatever planets are up at the time. At times, some of these objects can be faint, depending on conditions, and it does takes some night vision and telescope adaptation to see these things well sometimes!I do show at least one constellation and explain how it is differently named and understood by different cultures. I also explain that these are different for the Native tribes in our area. Only THESE things cannot be discussed in depth as tribal traditions we respect require. This guest obviously was looking for a different sort of experience/trip. At times, guests call about the program having heard of an astronomy program in Moab but may not have had the time to research my website and/or ask questions about the type of program I offer. It seems that these folks were expecting a constellation-pointing type program and for that sort of activity, I highly recommend guests check out what the National/State Parks offer, or enjoy one of the many wonderful night viewing spots located in our area!
Alex provides the chairs, blankets, and telescope....we just enjoyed a spectacular view of the skies and a knowledgable presentation by Alex. If clouds roll in, he is willing to adjust the charges or change your night. Very easy to work with!
We read the reviews of Alex and his outing. We decided to do this event and were thrilled with the experience. We have teen sons that love astronomy. They were so engaged with Alex and what he was able to show us with his telescope. I highly recommend this outing is you have anyone in your party that loves looking at stars and wants a deeper understanding.
It's very difficult to add anything to the five star reviews that have gone before. It was a wonderful evening that lasted three hours (30 minutes for meeting up and driving to the dark sky site, 2.5 hours presentation of the heavens). There were only four customers and we paid $40 each. Whilst setting up the telescope, Alex kept us entertained with both the history of telescopes and his own introduction to the science. Then it was on to the stars and planets - seeing Saturn was a big plus and Uranus like a smooth shiny snooker ball at close to two billion miles distance was mind-blowing. I've always been a little bit interested in astronomy but this event has been a catalyst for pursuing the subject back in the UK - this is in no small measure due to Alex's enthusiasm and ability to involve the group in the event by asking and inviting questions. Carl Sagan said 'we are stardust' - Alex explained why. I only have one piece of advice and this is nothing against Alex or the experience, it's just that this is a late evening experience and we were tired after a day hiking through Arches NP - the heat in Moab is really exhausting and I'd recommend not doing too much on the day of the experience or not planning too much for the following day (particularly if you have children). But do have this experience - it will be a memorable addition to your trip.
The night weather was perfect, an appreciated cooling from the July day heat. The moon wasn't set to rise for several hours, so the sky was getting darker by the minute.Alex was weaving his stories while the night's darkness and silence applied his voice. My entire family enjoyed the experience. I particularly remember Alex talking of Native Rock Art with a second sun recording an event nearly a thousand years earlier.I recommend this experience
You get to enjoy dark skies, tons of stars, a great telescope and Alex orchestrating a wonderful show. We saw Saturn and it's moons, Uranus, star clusters, the ring nebula and and even 2 colliding galaxies (which was the highlight for me)! Alex does a great job making sure that everyone in the group (10 people on our night) gets their chance at the scope. He also provides very interesting commentary throughout the evening. I'm an astronomy nut and really enjoyed it - and my wife (who obliged me but was on the fence about attending) had a great time and said it was way better than she imagined.
Listening to Alex was like listening to Carl Sagon or Neil De Grass Tyson!!! He can paint amazinwg images in your mind as you as listen to his narrative that remind you of Cosmos. He also is eager to field any questions you might have for him. The best money my husband and I spent on our vacation. His vast knowledge of the area is astounding. If you seek more than just scraping the surface of what Moab presents, book one of Alex's presentations!
Best show in Moab. Alex walks you through many of the sights in the night sky and does it with expertise and knowledge of someone who is devoted to viewing the stars. Don't miss this opportunity to increase your knowledge of the night sky and have a very enjoyable time doing so. A must activity for Moab.
We took the astronomy tour with Alex, it was very good, right combination of interesting facts about the cosmos and looking at interesting objects through his telescope.Would recommend this as something different to do in Moab.
We weren't sure what to expect, but were thrilled with the experience. Our guide gave us the history of Astronomy and explained how telescopes worked. We viewed many wonderful sights both with and without the telescopes. Alex was patient and made sure everyone participated.
We visited Moab for the first time this August and packed it full of adventure. Our kids are 14 and 11 and were old enough to do some of the really adventurous activities here. Their favorite may have been the relaxed evening spent with Alex at Red Rock Astronomy. We went to a bluff near Canyonlands. The sky was crystal clear. Alex showed us some wonderful sites within the sky: Ring Nebula, Andromeda galaxy, and the finale of Saturn with it's rings in clear view. Our boys came home asking to buy some more astronomy books. Great time. We hope to do this again on our next visit.
