Beautiful park surrounds dam. Perfect for picture taking and wildlife spotting. Lots of deer to see. The streams to the west of the dam are teaming with trout. Fly fishing is big here.
Love going here for the magnificent views especially in the fall. We also enjoy walking around the wier dam area and fishing in the summer.
We always love our trips to the Wier Dam. It is a nice place to take a walk, wade in the river, fish or just spend time with your family.
We love going here. Nice relaxing trails to walk. Love bring our friends who are visiting here. Also great fishing!!! Come check it out!
If you want a quiet spot loaded with huge catfish, go to South Holston Dam. On the road leading to the top of the dam, we saw a young doe munching on some grass. Our son did some fishing and hooked a catfish so large, it bent his hook! The view is incredible. If you're going, do some research into the creation of the dam and the little town that was flooded and sits at the bottom of the lake.
Very nice area to rest, relax and enjoy the scenery. Nice drive in the mountains. I would highly recommend.
Any time of day you can see the sun cascading on the water. You can hear the fish jump and the mountains around. It's God's picture drawn in front of you.
Have been going to the South Holston Dam for many years as we live about 20 minutes from it. Overall a great place to see wonderful mountain views. There are boats available to rent, you can picnic at many different places at the dam, and there are many trails to take (bike or hike). I would highly recommend for a nice day of activity!
We went for a drive up to the Dam and its quite impressive. Situated aroung the dam are lote of picnic tables and BBQs free for you to use. lower down near the wier is a great spot for some fishing and you can slap you fresh catch straight on the BBQ. Also make a nice romantic evening stroll along the river. The mrs loved it !!
This is one of the most beautiful lakes anywhere! Clear, clean water surrounded by majestic mountains. This is God's country!
This was man made during the depression by TVA. Amazing sight. steps and steps of large rocks were piled between two close mountaing to block the water and it flooded a whole city.
On a recent trip to the area with my wife, we visited the Dam ad Weirs. I grew up a few miles from the dam and remember fishing in the river for trout. Time have changed with the addition of the weirs the river has gron in popularity with trout fishermen. The river was full of fishermen wading and drifting in boats. The weir has a park with walking trails, picknick tables, and boat landing.
This is one of the most beautiful places in the world ! This man made dam sits in the foot hills of TN and straddles the TN/VA line. The dam site is situated in an area where the river descends out of the Appalachian Mountains and enters the upper Holston Valley, My family has picnicked here for over 40 years as well as used the surrounding Holston River for boating. There is lots of shades and picnic tables as well as marked hiking trails. TVA has a small building on site that serves as a restroom facility and has a brief history , including maps, of the area and the dam. When visiting the area don't miss this scenic wonder, it is a must day trip !
Nice to see what the TVA has done. We only drove in and on the dam but a decent experience. I'd give it a 3 or 4 out of 5
I personally love to use this area for photography shoots. But when traveling and looking for a nice area to have a picnic this is a wonderful place... Plenty of shade and picnic areas plus plenty of room for children to run and play. Although there are no playgrounds for the children to play.
