This is a great local museum giving the story of the town that refused to drown. The photos, artifacts, and excellent tour guides provide you with the human side of historical events. Set aside an hour or so and learn what lies below Lake Watauga.
The photo is NOT of the Butler Museum. The Museum is small, a replica of the original Butler Train Station - not a gigantic white building.
Rolling Thunder Tn. 4 did a flag raising and a missing man chair dedication at the museum. Old town Butler was relocated to its present site to allow the building of thw Watauga Dam, which was the largest earthen dam in the country The Butler Museum is full of items & pictures from the old days. Packed FULL of GREAT N.E. Tennessee history! You will love this place!
The Butler Museum is a very special place for locals. The town of Butler was originally located in what is now the Watauga Lake. When the lake was built in the 1940s, the town was moved to it's current location. Many folks who were displaced still live in the area. The Butler Museum is a must see for locals and visitors alike. It's a really touching experience to go through the museum and understand the history of 'the town that wouldn't drown."
