We just drove through fir a quick driving tour. Nice updated campground. Decent playground. Lovely cabins for rent. This is also one of the state parks woth a hotel to
We rented a cabin for a couple of days and it was well worth it! This park has a limited number of cabins and vary from 2 to 3 bedrooms and 1 to 2 bathrooms. With a full kitchen area, Full Refrigerator, cooking utensils and enough dinnerware for 6 occupants it was a welcome change from eating out every night. We arrived late and it rained the only full day we had a t the park, but it looked like there was a place for the smaller kids to play. Not sure how easy or difficult the hiking trails were, but there was a river nearby so if the weather had been better, I'm sure we would have enjoyed hiking.
We went camping at HH for Thanksgiving. We were there for 4 days. Hey have redone the campground. Very nice and woodsy. The bathrooms are nice. Could be a little warmer. CON: Need desperately to de-lime the shower heads. So crusty the water was spraying everything but me.The hiking was moderate, not too easy not too hard. Kayaking is definitely something we will do when we return in the spring. There is a large area around the restaurant and inn down the road. I saw people jogging. This is a plus for me. Also could ride the bikes around. The restaurant was packed Thanksgiving Day. 2 hour wait, so we went to Columbia to eat.The one thing that really bugged me was the train that ran in the wee hours of the morning the first night. By the second night I think I just got used to it. But, the train does run ALOT and it must cross several roads due to all the horn blowing. There were some nice handicapped spots right next the restroom.
My husband and I had planned a camping trip with two of the grandkids. It was originally suppose to be tent camping, but unplanned cold weather changed that! We tried to reserve a cabin, but they were full, so we settled for an inn room. When we checked in, we asked if there were any cancellations for a cabin and they said. We got our keys to our family unit and went to check it out before getting our luggage. While we were exploring our unit, the phone rang in the room. It was the front desk saying that someone just canceled a cabin. Whoo hoo! We had a two bedroom cabin with a bathroom, a large living room with a really big stone fireplace, and a fully equipped kitchen. It was all very clean and we had everything we needed. There are several playgrounds in the park, each different than the other. Very well maintained and safe. You can also use the bicycles available for one hour. If no one has signed up for the next hour, you can keep it another hour. We could have kept the bikes all day :)Because it was so chilly, we didn't do much of anything else outdoors. We brought our own food, so didn't try the eating at the restaurant. The cabin has a bbq grill outside (park style), and we also made hot dogs in the fireplace and s'mores just about every meal!
So we tent camped for 2 nights and the campground is very nice! The sites are well maintained, the bath house was very clean...and warm (it was nippy at night!), the folks that live at and maintain the grounds are very nice and they have wood/kindling if you need it. Also...there are stores right down the road if you need them. The campground was busier than I thought they would be at this time of year but there were lots of kids, lots of laughter....great family fun or good for couples if you just wanna get away =)
I'm so pleased that some updating was done to the campground. It really needed it! There are new bathhouses that are really nice. Big shower stalls. The campsites have a wide, paved pad and have been cleaned up. So much improvement has been done. It's a great place to camp!
Yesterday I visited Henry Horton State Park for the first time for the sole purpose of hiking with my dogs while my husband was in a meeting. I loved it!! The trails of are pretty and and rich in the ecology or the area. River...hardwood forests...cedar glades.... fields...old homesteads and cars...backcountry campsites. The best part is the trails are easy enought for a beginning hiker and diverse enough for an experienced hiker wanting an easy hike. I always hike with my dogs on leash and the trails were wide and good enough for me to hike easily with 2 dogs. The campground looked inviting. My husband ate at the restaurant and said the buffet was good. I never made it to the lodge and I love that there is a farmers market there on Saturdays.
We had campsite 26 and it was great. (But don't tell anyone) The pad was wide enough to have both our class C and their nice new wooden picnic table on and have plenty of room to move around. The campground looks as if it has been recently renovated, the pavement was new, the water faucets and electrical boxes were new, the majority of all the pads looked new. I have never been to this park before but the bath house is great and clean. The showers actually have doors on a dressing room before the shower not just the usual flimsy shower curtain that we have seen at many other camp grounds and there is plenty of room and hooks and a bench. The water pressure is lame but I haven't found any different at any other campground. I looked in all three of the bath houses and they were all the same. The playground at the camp is not one of the new fancy ones but my kids had a good time playing. The dump station does need to be revised and updated since the hose is on the opposite side of the dump so we had to pass it under the RV to clean out the sewer hose but we have actually seen worse. We drove over to the Inn to have the breakfast buffet one morning and it was well worth it. For $7.97 you get your choice from a huge buffet of everything from eggs (with fixings), potatoes, biscuits, sausage, crisp bacon, french toast, chicken and steak fried patty's with milk gravy, lots of fruit and more that I can't remember. Only thing missing was pancakes and cereal (they had yogurt and granola) but I didn't have room for them anyway. The Inn and cabins do look old from the outside but I didn't get to see the inside. The park has a couple of new play grounds and more picnic tables on the river than I could count. The 2 trails we went on were good and we saw several deer. They did offer 2 different canoe trips Saturday but it was too cold for us. We can't wait to go back and try the other trails and do some fishing. Oh by the way, the campground has wifi for free.
We recently spent 3 nights at Henry Horton as part of a family gathering. We booked our cabin a year in advance (including giving a deposit), and on the day that I was to check in, I had to argue with the staff to prove it. We ended up in a different cabin for a night. That aside, the cabins are a disgrace. The are far from clean (bugs coming out of the sink; bed linens were dirty, stained and had holes). The food in the Inn was ok, and the wait staff was very pleasant, but anything beyond the buffet took forever. Also, half of the children's play areas were incredibly dangerous. The grounds were beautiful and the pavilions were nice. We enjoyed the time in the pool, and most importantly, the time with family. Great park to visit, but find somewhere else to spend the night.
We drove three hours to this park with our flat back canoe on the trailer, understanding through all information online that there was a boat ramp available. However, there is no place to but in a boat from a trailer without a 4 wheel drive anywhere there or close by. The very steep ramp at the park is blocked and locked with poles, plus there was rocks blocking the bottom of the ramp so it just couldn't be used. The hosts and ranger were real nice, and offered to unlock it and move the poles only because of our slight handicap, but I still would have needed a 4 wheel drive to back down there off the ramp to the mud bank. Someone had a coon hound pup camping that night which got pretty annoying, and kept us awake. There was a train that went by a few times and woke me up. No complaints on the hosts or staff of the park...just really disappointed in the river access. That could be stated clearly on the state website or twra boat ramp list or something. TWRA showed they had 2 boat ramps available. The tent sights by the river require a mountain climb to get down there to the banks, and we couldn't see the river from the sight as it appeared on the map. The campsite wasn't level, and the way they had placed wood around the tent spot, it seemed to pool up with water in the rain. It doesn't seem fair to taxpayers to not have access to a river in their own state. I can't recommend the park to anyone who wishes to put in a small boat with a trailer. Boat motors are totally discouraged also here.
This park was a day trip for us. It has beautiful picnic areas and lots of playgrounds! We saw deer on the campground/golf course side. That's always a treat! There is a pool which anyone can use for a fee (if you stay overnight, I think it's free). Cabins look like they need a little TLC. An inn is also available. Sonic is nearby and also Foodland for supplies you might need.We had the seafood buffet on a Friday night. It was very good and our waitress was a delight!
There is a golf course here, I think. I don't golf, so we did not take advantage of that. We did use the lodge and the food was good.
Nice place to take the family and relax or BBQ. Very pretty scenery. The Teens had fun walking around and looking for other teens.
Henry Horton Sate Park will fill your every need. They have great meeting facilities, a huge pool along with a kiddie pool, tennis courts, volley ball, not to mention a world famous golf course. The restaurant at Henry Horton has an all you can eat buffet that is second to none! They have rooms at the hotel or cabins to rent and the Duck River borders the park, so you can canoe, kayak or fish!
Lovely quiet Park, for walks with your dog, lovely river views, well maintained, and good Rangers patrol often, so its safe. Has a frisby golf course which is great fun, and the restaurant does a great buffet. Swimming pool is open in the summer and there are tennis and basketball courts if you are feeling energetic. The hotel and cabins are available year round, and is a great park for families or a quiet getaway.
