Long Hunter State Park is awesome. It has several Trails to choose from but my favorite is the Trail that leads you by Percy Priest Lake for much of the time. It is a loop trail and you can take your dog along for company as long as it is on a leash. My wife and I like to sit on the rock formations over looking the lake and have a snack. It is a very pretty site and you usually see boats of all kinds, leisure or fishing and sailboats as well. The trails are not difficult and you can't get lost because it is a loop trail too. It is the one trail we always see deer in. Plan to spend between 2 to 3 hours at the most hiking this trail. If you drive all the way in to the Park Head Quarters, you have driven about 1 1/2 miles too far to park at the trail head described above. Great exercise, great scenery and lots of fun for the casual hiker.
Long Hunter State Park is our third favorite park near Nashville, just behind Fall Creek Falls and Radnor Lake State Parks. Long Hunter has many areas for a short hike or scenic and pleasant walk. It has a paved walkway 2 miles long around Couchville Lake. Very nice and pleasant walk. They have little signs on the trees teaching you what type of tree it is. Deer and wild turkey everywhere which come close to you as you walk. It has a few other dirt trails to hike more strenuous and rugged. The Priest Lake trail is nice but is not a loop, so estimate your time to make it back bye fore dark. The park closes at sunset and the park rangers give 15 min warning then expect you to be in your car at sunset. They are very persistent because they close the park gate when empty. They have alerted us that they have power to give us a trespassing ticket if too late leaving. Very nice park though ! Try it you'll like it, just be ready to leave by sunset because they WILL be waiting for you!
I LOVE Nashville, there are so many great parks in and around town. Long Hunter State Park sits right on the edge of Nashville, just minutes from the airport. There is a boat ramp, playgrounds, bathrooms, and superb walking/hiking trails. They also rent canoes during the Summer months. There also seems to always be a ranger within sight, at least most of the times I've been there. The 2 mile trail around the small lake is FABULOUS! I can't think of a day I haven't been there that I didn't see deer. Some of the trees are marked on this trail, so if you're into identifying the flora and Fauna you're in luck. There's also a bridge over the lake to stroll on, it's just beautiful. There are also several unpaved trails within the park that are worth your time. The Volunteer Day Loop trail (4 miles) is good for a moderate hike. You can find a map of the park here: http://tnstateparks.com/assets/pdf/additional-content/park-maps/long-hunter_park-map.pdf
Had a nice relaxing time at this park. Nice accommodations with plenty of picnic spots, wide open spaces, lovely lake and nice fishing dock. There is a lot of ground to cover at this park. There is a hiking trail around the lake and a bridge to get to the other side. A very nice shelter house as well as a fishing dock with plenty of space for everyone. It wasn't very crowded, so there were wild turkeys, deer, and plenty of birds around. There are three different areas of the park: fishing lake, cliff overlook, and camping area. I can't wait to try my hand at fishing next time!
We enjoyed a quiet visit on a beautiful sunny day. Very few people were there, which was surprising. It proved a lovely get-away time for us.
We camped out here with our family and the staff was friendly and informative. The grounds were perfect for camping and running and playing around (for the kids). We fish, hiked and did some community service (trash pick-up). Great fishing area!
Went to my first Pow wow there few wks. back & it was awesome.... not only the culture of the pow wow & the dances but the park was beautiful... had a wonderful time the only way it could of been better would of been if the weather played fair it was rather chilly... beautiful costumes, people, great food, crafts there was plenty to do
Long Hunter is one of my favorite places to go walking and hiking. They have a great 2 mile paved trail around Couchville Lake through the beautiful woods, as well as many dirt trails. You will usually always see a lot of wildlife, such as deer, turkeys, butterflies, squirrels and box turtles. There is a lot of fishing spots, picnic areas, boat ramp, clean bathrooms and a very nice new playground for the kids. In the fall they have a neat Pow Wow I enjoy going to every year. This park is absolutely wonderful and has many areas of it to explore.
Long Hunter State Park is one of my favorite places to hike. It is close to Nashville and when I have visitors come, I always offer to take them to Long Hunter to get out of the city, get some fresh air, and enjoy a great hike.I enjoy the Day Loop Trail and the Volunteer Trail. The trailhead is located north of the main highway off route 171 (turn west onto Bakers Grove Lane and you'll see a sign pointing you to the parking area). The Day Loop Trail is about a 4.5 mile loop which includes some dramatic views of Percy Priest Lake. This trail has some rugged parts and some climbs but would be easy for an experienced hiker. The Volunteer Trail is 6 miles out, 6 miles back and is relatively flat. The Volunteer Trail ends at a primitive campsite. Sometimes on the Volunteer Trail, the trail isn't very clearly marked. I got off track twice and had to guess my way back to the trail. If you lose the trail, just keep going along the shoreline and you should have no trouble finding it again. (I think this is because it is not a well travelled trail which makes for some solitude). Both trails are always close to the lake; there are rock outcroppings which would make a great spot for a picnic. On Saturdays, the lake gets pretty busy so you'll hear a lot of noise from the lake. There are coves and inlets in which boaters will anchor and play music. On a recent Saturday hike, I couldn't believe the noise that was coming from the lake. 20 to 30 boats had anchored and everyone was clearly having a great time. So if you need silence, avoid the trail on a hot summer Saturday or go early.
Long Hunter is about a 20-25 minute drive from my house so I go there occasionally, mainly just to get away from the hustle/bustle and concrete. There are boat ramps, picnic areas, and a playground for kids. I really like the flat paved walking trail around the lake's edge that meanders through the woods. It takes you to a walking bridge across a portion of the lake. Of course there are all kinds of wildlife to view in the park----deer, geese, ducks, and fish, if you closely. My favorite thing to attend at Long Hunter is the Native American Pow Wow in the fall.Long Hunter is pretty large with lots of wooded areas and a lot of area bordering the lake. I really wish the State of TN would consider building one of their well-known buffet restaurants at this park and also some cabins to rent----all of this overlooking the lake! I realize this would add a whole new level of management and service expectations but I think it would do very well with not only travelers but local middle Tennesseans.
We took our dog walking though the park. The water is very nice. Lots of places to picnic. We saw two deer. It was nice.
The park is huge, and has quite a bit to do within it. We went on a pretty nice day (as people are apt to do on nice days) and it was extremely busy. That made it hard to truly enjoy the scenery, but it was still a nice place. I'd like to come back in the fall and do some hiking when it's a little less crowded.
Long Hunter State Park is a great park with something for most everyone. There are several loop hiking trails of roughly one to two miles and more day trails that are four or mo miles in length. Exertion is moderate for these trails. Mountain biking is available at Bryant Grove but the trail is relatively flat and rocky and probably not very challenging for advanced riders. There are also multiple picnic sites to choose from in the park and wild life is everywhere. The park has many sink holes in the limestone but no caves to explore.Fishing in Couchville Lake and Piercy Priest Lake are readily available as well.Pets are restricted to only a few areas and they must remain on a leash.
Great state park with 2 mile trail around scenic lake. Great for walking or jogging, but no trail for bicycles. Especially good in spring and fall. Lots of wildlife sightings. Picnic area, playground and volleyball areas. Fishing and row boat rentals. Perfect for family outing.
We go here about once a week! We almost always see deer...which is a thrill for us! It has a nice playground too for the grandkids! Very peaceful place to take a walk. Hope to fish and picnic here soon. The park rangers are terrific when we ask for information!!!
