I was amazed at the intriguing information and memorabilia available that tributes this genre of music. I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Henry Harrison's recollections that he has personally experienced throughout his association with music and life experiences. There are many items on display that cannot be viewed elsewhere. The tour did go a little long, but where else can you play drums that were used for many Elvis's song recordings using Johnny Cash's drumsticks? Thoroughly enjoyable and fascinating.
I've been a songwriter and entertainer for almost 20 years. I've played many Elvis, Johnny, and Carl songs and I've played my own rock and roll. And as an artist, the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in Jackson, TN is like a music home away from home, filled with music history on the inside and a big stage outside that just begs you to get up and play. It's amazing to me to know that The Beatles listened to Carl Perkins when they were teenagers like Carl was their biggest music hero. Well, Carl was a massive influence on The Beatles, and many others. Elvis sang Carl's "Blue Suede Shoes" and many others sang Carl's songs. I remember when Carl died, I was at the funeral. There was the church and the building close by that displayed the video of the ongoing service. I couldn't believe so many big names in music that were there to pay their respects to Carl Perkins. George Harrison singing a Perkins song was the highlight. So take a trip to Jackson, TN and feel the heart of music and rock and roll.
I am quite a rockabilly buff, while listening to his tributes, I couldn't bring myself to correct Mr.Harrison.He gave inaccurate information, almost the entire tour. It's also kinda sloppy & disorganized.
Jackson and the Hall of Fame are worth your travel. If you like Rock-A-Billy and Blues you must visit the heart of Dixie. Stay at the Rodeway Inn for the best value and most friendly staff anywhere in town. Loved our stay very much. Thank you Jackson!
There isn't much to say about this museum, simply because it doesn't amount to much. It mainly consist of pictures in frames. you can google & print almost everything they have in museum. Kids complained of boredom with minutes of arrival.
Great pace, great host, tons of history is what I found when I stopped over in Jackson TN recently. I did not know a lot about rock-a-billy but now I feel so blessed to have learned how this style of music changed everything. If anywhere close make sure you stop and you will not be sorry.
Our family decided between trips in Memphis and Nashville, that 'were goin' to Jackson' - and trip advisor rightly suggested coming here. I have to say, we had a brilliant time. Susie was the perfect host and we all loved her enthusiasm. We had a very personal tour and insight into many great exhibits - from Carl Perkins blue suede shoes to WS Holland's drum kit. We were there on Halloween - and whilst Susie was talking to us, we heard a couple of strange noises upstairs - it was seriously spooky, and another great talking point.Loved all the anecdotes - please please visit - well worth the recommended donation of $10 - must admit we felt guilty at how low the price was. Thanks again.
What can I say we arrived at the hall of fame and it was closed. We had this as a place we wanted to visit whilst touring the southern states so was a little disappointed to say the least, but I had a contact number on the web site so I rung and Henry answered and to cut a long story short he said he can come back and let us visit in 10 mins which he did (top man) - what a lovely gentlemen he is. We had the history of the rockin scene as he had experienced for himself in the 50s, and is now common history Carl Perkins, Elvis, the Burnette brothers etc. We all had a go on the drums, watched videos along with Henry's enthusiasm, it was wonderful. I would just like to thank Henry from all our group, we appreciated everything that he did for us which we will remember as a highlight of our holiday.
This museum may not be very big in size, but it is well worth a visit. We were given a personal, guided tour that lasted over 2 hours and was extremely interesting and informative. Unlike many museums where you just look at exhibits, here you are encouraged to handle things like the Blue Suede Shoes of Carl Perkins and to play the drums played by Elvis's drummer. The guide we had was very friendly and knowledgeable and brought the artists to life. As it is a non-profit, self-funding museum there is no entrance charge, but you are invited to make a donation. You can also write your name and a comment on the wall. This is certainly one of the best museums I have been to.
I just returned from my visit to this great Hall of Fame. Lee was our guide. I was joined by folks from both Germany and England! Lee's enthusiasm for the history within was immediately apparent and infectious. Many personal items from Rock-A-Billy greats were accompanied by personal stories relates to visitors. This venue is a hands-on and interactive place. Where else does one not only see a pair of Carl Perkins' Blue Suede Shoes, but the host removed these from their showcase and places them in your hands! I was even invited to sit behind the "house" drum kit (played bu such legends as DJ Fontana. And then handed a pair of WS Holland's drum sticks so "I" could hit a lick or two on the kit. This is not a museum. But rather a living and breathing venue that still hosts live shows as well as an International Rock-A-Billy Festival. Every lover of American music should make this a "must visit" if anywhere close to Jackson, Tennessee. Oh yes, if one offers a completely voluntary donation they provide a pen for you to sign YOUR name on one of the walls of this great attraction.
Great nostalgia and so many interesting facts shared with southern hospitality. Susie, the tour guide, shared stories about Carl Perkins, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Paul McCartney. It was very enjoyable. Lot of memorabilia to see. Thanks, Susie!
This musuem in itself is a wonderful haven of music, legends, history and talent but the true gem of this establishment is Henry, the president and by far the most valuable item in the entire place. My husband and I are huge Rockabilly fans and went to Jackson to attend the Rockabilly Hall of Fame Music Festival and visit the museum but we NEVER expected to be SO impressed and receive such true, informatitive and intimate stories and history of so many legends. Henry grew up with Johnny Cash and truely can say he knows/knew the people he so passionately shares with you. From photos, to memoriabilia, to videos, to actually playing the same drums that Elvis' drummer played and with the sticks that belonged to the great W.S. Holland (and autographed)...you will not be disappointed with visiting this wonderful museum. If you are in Jackson for a Friday or Saturday night they also have dances both nights. Point of interest - Henry is in the Boxing Hall of Fame.
Who would've thought that taking a wrong turn would reveal such a treasure! Stopped to take pictures outside and much to our surprise, this nice man pulls up and tells us his name is henry and he is the president of this not so little museum. It was such a great place and henry is so passionate and has real first hand experience with some of the greats.we spent only a short time there with him as he had an appointment to be somewhere , but he took the time to explain the history and how he started this little treasure. It is free to visit , they do accept donations. If you area rock a billy fan this Iis one place you dont want to miss!
Learned a lot about local music legends from the owner, who saw it all first-hand. Loved it. Give Elivis' drum set a try while you're there.
We were a little unsure of what to expect from the initial description but decided to check it out and i'm so glad we did. What a great place this is and Henry is a legend - funny, passionate and someone with real first hand experience of some of the greats. We spent nearly two hours with Henry, talking through the history, the artefacts he's collected, playing the drums and sharing stories. If you have any sort of interest in Rock-A-Billy and the history behind 'the million dollar quartet' then don't miss this place - the best $10 you'll spend in the music belt.Henry if you're reading, thanks for a great afternoon - we had a blast.
