johnsonville state historic park

The Johnsonville park is a hidden treasure that not only represents a Civil War Battle site, but also commemorates the town of Johnsonville that ceased to exist with the flooding of the area to create Kentucky Lake. A lot of interesting history to explore and learn about. One of my favorite stops when in the area.

Came for the 150th events. Great demonstrations from drilling, cannon firing, civiling life to African-American history. The Visitor center is very nice with film and good interpretive exhibits. The park great views of river, hiking trails with plenty of waysides to explain the historical importance. Will be coming back.

Visited this park on recommendation of one of the park rangers at Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park. We took a picnic lunch in with us and had an enjoyable time there. Then we waked through the Crockett Cemetery. Also hiked around the Upper Redoubt area before going down to the Lower Redoubt area and hiked along the old railroad bed, then back along the shore of the lake. Such a pleasant time and all kinds of photo opportunities. We will certainly be going back for another visit.

Johnsonville is a beautiful park there is lots of history and beautiful walking trails and vistas. There is a little museum located at the entrance to the park.

Ranger-led hike in March was as good as it gets! Informative, friendly, and moderate exertion. Beautiful views of the lake.Another hike is planned for June 7, and we plan to be there. The displays and gift shop at the park welcome center are high quality, too.

I am a Civil War reenactor and spent the weekend at the 149th Anniversary of the Battle. Park Ranger Wooten has done an outstanding job recreating Historic Johnsonville as described in letters written home by a soldier stationed there.. Nov 2014 promises to be an experience to remember. Johnsonville and Nathan Bedford Forrest will be conduct a joint battle across the TN River. If you are a Civil War enthusist or just like history, Johnsonville will surely be on your list of things to do.

This park has undergone a rennaissance in the past couple of years and is always a favorite to go to. The historical aspects are being brought out with the new Interpretive Center (a must see)located along Highway 70 about 1.5miles for the actual park and in the park they are recreating what the old Town/Fort of Johnsoville was like in the mid 1800's when under Union occupation and then the battle that ensued with Nathan Bedford Forrest. Great place to spend the day, picnic and hike trails!

This state park has a lot to offer a day adventurer, or if you have an RV, you can extend your visit for a longer period - also, bring your bass boat or your! I was first introduced to this park by a native son of TN (I moved here to marry him.). He liked to ride his bicycle in the park and also run the trails. We both enjoy walking here and bicycling here during spring and fall. I've seen eagles while walking in this park!! Good spot for birding. We both have participated in a 5 mile run that is sponsored by the TN State Park Run series - (multiple State Parks all over the state take part in this series, which is a perennial favorite among dedicated runners). This is always a great run and we enjoy the food provided afterwards by the Friends of the Park who make a delicious bean soup and provide some great company. If you are interested in boating and fishing - this is a great spot for launching. Also, an RV park that offers year-round camping. There are cozy picnic areas as well that provide a view of the river. A nice little privately run restaurant located at the Pebble Isle Marina offers a decently priced lunch or breakfast (I think they offer dinner as well during high season) and the food and setting is worth the stop - nothing fancy - just good food and pretty scenery.Within the past couple years, a new museum was built that provides some history lessons on local battles that took place in the vicinity during the Civil War. Wonderful folks staff this park and keep it safe and clean for the public to enjoy. On one occasion when we had brought our bicycles for a ride, when we got ready to leave, our truck battery died and the Park Ranger provided a jump for us - like I said -wonderful staff. Guess what - you can even go fishing and get pizza delivery here from a local pizza spot in New Johnsonville. One day, while my husband and I were walking in the park, we saw a bass boat pull up to the shoreline and a man got out of the boat and met a pizza delivery guy. At first, we weren't sure what we were going to witness when we saw the truck pull up and just sit while the fisherman got out of his boat and walk toward the truck, but when we saw that it was a pizza deliver, it was pretty humorous. So yes, you can even get pizza delivery and watch football in your RV on the weekend. It might be Tony's Pizza that delivers - not positive - but call them and ask. If you're looking for a tranquil place with some quiet beauty - this is it.

This state park is small but nice. Nice spots to get out and walk. Beautiful views of Kentucky Lake and has an excellent restaurant at the marina.

Truthfully, not much to see here, it’s a day-use facility park located on the Cumberland River that's a little out of the way. It is the site of the Civil War Battle of Johnsonville. . It seems that some parks got hit harder than others in terms of budget cuts. The ‘museum’ has limited hours. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go to this park, however it’s across the river from Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park. On a roadtrip, you could pass through. Who knows you may like it…. There was some construction/renovations, I'll swing by in a year or so.
