I had high hopes for a visit to the Farm. It wasn't quite what I expected. After reading reviews, and then seeing person I sorta came to the conclusion that this place is a SLOW work in progress. A reviewer in 2012 mentioned the Dragon House, to this date it is still not finished. It's a cool concept to see the hobbit style structures but when u see extension cords running out of openings and sparse furnishings it makes u wonder if too many projects are going on. So many incomplete areas. There was also a bio dome structure open and all that was in there was bicycles and junk. Our last stop before leaving was the Farm store, I can understand its purpose for community residents, however as a guest, I found items that I could purchase in any Whole Food, Earth Fare, etc. I had hoped I would find handmade items or art in addition to what they offered. I believe with some cleaning, de-junking and completion of projects under way, the concept and community would thrive. Maybe it was the time of year, maybe not. I would be interested to see if they host spring and summer events.

I spent 2 nights at the Eco-Hostel at The Farm, in May 2012. I slept well. I paid only $18 per night. I wandered around looking at some awesome cob houses (ask about the Dragon House if you go, awesome sculpted walls, like something out of Lord of The Rings). I talked to some people who have just moved there, some who have lived there since it was founded in 1971. It's still a mecca for conferences on sustainable farming, building. They weren't having one the week I was there so I had the hostel dorm to myself. The Farm Store can serve sandwiches and you can get supplies, though it's all vegetarian. Use your favorite search engine and look up "The Farm, Summertown, TN" to read its colorful history.
