This is a great little hidden gem in the middle of clarksville. It does not take long to wak the length and see the building, but is worth it.
I wouldn’t call myself a history buff, but I do enjoy learning interesting facts that have occurred throughout our history. Well, I stumbled upon Fort Defiance and I glad I did. I got to spend about an hour here, but I wish I had more time to stay longer. You should make this a place to visit.
The old fort has a couple of cannons and was an earthen fort. We did not go in the interpretive building as it was near closing.
I enjoy coming here with my family. It doesn't take hours and it really gives me and my family a more indepth look into the past of Clarksville. They have really worked hard to improve and expand all of it. This is a great place to visit with your kids are just a friend. Either way, you will enjoy it. the people who work here are kind and very knowledgable.
My husband and I visited Fort Defiance to gain more knowledge and better understanding of events of the Civil War. The brief film was helpful and the walking tour was interesting. Prior to our visit, I did not know what an "earthworks fort" actually was--- now I know. William, he historian, was very helpful. One negative, I'll mention was that the outdoor pathway map was a bit confusing.
Nice civil war place to see a lot of history. Good walk if you have kids and a nice view of the city
If you are a fort buff, you might like this. really just a small park for the average joe. I live in Clarksville and don't go here.
Very nice displays, and video, the walking trails are also very nice. If you are new to Clarksville, or just visiting, you should take a few hours and explore this place!!
My son and I have just moved to the area and wanted to get out and about but little or no cost. We found Ft. Defiance and walked around and enjoyed reading all the information stands, seeing the cannons and taking pictures. Well worth the time! We didn't go into the museum but we should have and will probably go back soon! It's a free and interesting thing to do with beautiful scenery!
This is just a great place to walk around and enjoy the scenery. I think that anyone looking for a nice stroll this place is highly recommended.
A really beautiful place to walk and even have a picnic while learning the history of this place. The inside museum was really cool and informative. Another must do when in Clarksville. We really enjoyed it.
Small original earthworks of a fort over looking the river. Not much ever happened here and that is why it remained, untouched, until it was re-discovered and preserved.
Reading the reviews before going to visit the center I was expecting a lot. However I was truly disappointed in the place. This would be worth the visit when they host a civil war reenactment. The museum was tiny with reading materials, few objects to look at and a film to watch. I did like how this museum explained how African Americans participated in the civil war. This is often neglected in many civil war museums. There was a nice winding walking trail with not much to look at but a few cannons. It would be a nice place to have a picnic. However at the end of the trail there was no signs of where to go next. it just ended in a neighborhood but thankful the employee had told us the directions to get back to the museum.
Sunday, June 1st, Tony, Noel and I was driving around Clarksville checking out some lovely old Victorian Homes on Madison Street. We were making our way over to Route 79 Flea Market, while going there I noticed the sign about Fort Defiance..so once we were finished at the flea market I made the turn out the side road to the Park.Once there, it is easy to locate. The parking lot is very nice with plenty of room. There is a visitors center but it doesn't open until 1pm on Sundays so we just walked around the park. There was lots of signs to read and check out. There is also a few cannons, a few benches to sit on and a couple of picnic tables but NO Grills or Playground equipment. There is also some hiking trails that are paved and wounds out along the ridge to view the river with a lovely overlook of the city of Clarksville. There is also some hiking trails around the Earthworks of the original fort. It is well marked with plenty of signs to keep you off the Earthworks. The trees are really well marked and there are quite a few Black Cherry Trees there...The grass along the earthworks was still rather high, and sort of worried me about snakes..they need to cut this really badly. The park is FREE to enjoy which is always a plus in my book. I enjoyed the park and we ended up spending about 45 minutes there. I would go again and Highly recommend this to you and your family. Very informative and interesting park. We learned that General Stonewall Jackson was an unknown soldier while fighting at this battle here at this fort...before he became a leader for the UNION troops..I never knew that!!!!
A lot of park for not a big investment. The grounds are easily traversed in about a half an hour, the path is not wheelchair friendly at all, and you have to walk streets for part of it.The inside museum is great. With a movie and several interactive features. Not the great place for little children, and I wish there was more to the park.
