Came to see the lion king broadway show. Theater staff was helpful and friendly. Enjoyed the show and will be back for future shows.
Came here to see a broadway. The theater is beautiful, the staff was very nice. They sell refreshments and snacks. The place is clean, even the bathrooms. The reasons I'm giving a lower rating is the seating. Ours were in the lower balcony, you can see the stage just fine, but after sitting for so long the seats become very uncomfortable. They are very close to each other and I had to sit at an angle because my knees were digging into the hard back of the seat in front of me. Just hope you won't have a tall person in front of you, because you will not be able to see well.
I was here to watch the So You Think You Can Dance auditions. The theater is beautiful. Years ago I attended some events here and it has been nicely preserved. The ushers we saw were very cordial.
We're originally from NY, so have seen many Broadway shows, and this was as good as any-we saw The Lion King. Exquisite and exciting. Ordered tickets online in advance so got great seats.
The architecture of the theatre was beautiful and it was interesting to look around the theatre. We were in the balcony and they were OK to good seats. There is basically no room between your knees and the seatback in front of you, but understand given that it is an old theatre. We were there to watch The Lion King.We were able to find parking in a public ramp just one block from the theatre, so that was nice.I am from Des Moines, Iowa and I now even more appreciate how great of a jewel we have in the Des Moines Civic Center, in which I had also seen The Lion King.
Our family loves going to the Orpheum. There really isn't a bad seat in the place. We prefer to sit on the floor toward the back where you can see from a slightly elevated view. We just returned from seeing "The Lion King", which was probably one of our favorite shows so far.
The first time I saw the show Wicked, I fell in love with it and have seen it many times since then and seen it in many cities. When I saw it was in Memphis, I called my aunt and see if she wanted to take a get away weekend to her favorite city. The theater was built in 1928 at a staggering cost of $1.6 million. Today it remains one of the few movie places of the 1920's. In the 1980s the down town area of Memphis undertook a major revitalization and the restoration of both the Peabody and The Orpheum are credited with returning downtown to the major tourist destination that it is today. In 1982, $5 million was spent to restore it to its grand opulence. A move that has paid off well. I am a HUGE Broadway fan and have traveled over the country to attend my favorite shows (including NYC) and this is one of the most beautiful theatres I have ever been to and it in the grand scale of the theatres I visited while in London and Copenhagen. I mean our performing arts centers both here in Raleigh and Durham as well as in Charlotte, are very nice indeed, but I love the grand opulence of this building. The grand staircase is stunning flanked by a beautiful chandelier and artwork abounds. Outside is a walk of fame for he many legends who have passed through including my favorite..the late Robert Goulet (who I had the honor of having breakfast with along with several other fans after his performance in Camelot when he was in Charlotte) We were lucky enough to be 3rd row for one amazing performance of Wicked. And while on a ghost tour, we stopped outside the building and it seems the building is haunted by a young girl named Mary. But she isn't melovlant and just seems to enjoy hanging around the theatre. They are handicapped accessible and have snacks and drinks for purchase and you may take your drinks in during the performance. The building is listed on the national registry. They do have parking and it is accessible from the trolley line and within walking distance of many of the downtown hotels. They have a number of performances throughout the year This would be a great place to bring a group if your hosting a big event in town. While I loved the show and the building I was less than thrilled with the employees. Now when Wicked hits our town, it is difficult to get tickets, especially on the weekend. I called and called to see if there was anyway they could help me secure tickets especially since I already had plane tickets and a hotel. Finally I got sent to one very kind young man who was nice enough to call me right at 10 am on the day tickets went on sale and took my order. If your lucky enough to be in town while there is a Broadway show, make sure you attend a performance here.
I've been to this theatre for Wicked, the blue man group & tonight, Lion King. Not a bad seat in the house, even in the nose bleed section. Beautiful theatre. Broadway quality shows.
Saw the Lion King at the Orpheum during my trip. Beautiful theatre with comfortable seats and fair amount of space. All the staff were really friendly. A lady callasped whilst i was there and was overwhelmed with support she was given. The Lion King production was just Fantastic, a definate must see show.
The Orpheum Theater in Memphis is a beautiful, historic theater! I'm thrilled I stopped here on my road trip to see a performance of The Lion King. The staff was very helpful and kind. I loved that they have plastic cups with lids for purchase so that you can take your beverages into the theater with you. Sat front row balcony and it was PERFECT!!!!! Amazing performance! Amazing theater! Thank you!!!
This was the first trip for my boys to the Orpheum. They were immediately taken by how ornate and beautiful it is. I'm so proud to see shows like The Lion King being secured by The Orpheum. My advice for newcomers: It took a visit or two for me to best know how to maneuver the bathrooms during the intermissions. If you wait around or don't know where to go, you'll have trouble getting through the line before intermission is over, ladies.
We have season tickets and always enjoy going to shows at the Orpheum. They are replacing some seats to allow for more room ( a good thing). We have attended a variety of events there (movies, Broadway series, circ de sole, holiday concerts) and have really enjoyed the venue.
Great Plays !!!! You will not regret spending the money to go here.We saw War Horse there and it was amazing !!!!!
Though I did visit the Orpheum for regular productions, it was the summer movie series that always got me excited! From classics to contemporary blockbusters, it's always fun to watch a movie amid the classical backdrop of the Orpheum Theater. As to be expected the price on refreshments is price prohibitive for most so eat first or after!
I have attended many events at the Orpheum, including Broadway Plays and Musicals. The last event was the Lion King. We had excellent seats in the orchestra section, but I have had reserved seats in almost all sections of the theatre. I have no complaints about the seating, just the seats themselves. They are very uncomfortable, no matter where you are sitting. But with the wonderful surrounding architecture and the event itself, you forget about the uncomfortable seats.
