Tuckaleechee Caverns is a great place to visit. The cost is reasonable and the tour of the caverns is about 1.5 hours. It is well lighted and has a paved path. Waterfall and creek in the caverns is interesting.
There is NOTHING on the website for Tuckaleechee Caverns that says they are closed. I assume they are closed for the winter. But it didnt say that on their website. Just that they were open daily. I called and the voicemail doesnt say anything about them being closed for the season. So, we checked the times and planned this for one of our days of our vacation. Thankfully at the last minute I checked Trip Advisor before we drove 45 mins and saw where someone had posted about them not being open in the winter. They REALLY need to put something on their website informing people of this.
Great place to spend an hour or so, especially if the weather is bad and you're in the mood to do something. It's fairly inexpensive and the "good ol' boys" guides are pretty funny. Although you have a guide, we took our time and looked at what we wanted to see, and it was fine. They didn't have actual food there other than vending machine snacks, so don't go hungry. It looked like they may have the capacity to serve actual food, but it was closed up when we were there. This is not an attraction for the elderly or small children. A lot of areas are wet and slippery and there are very steep stairs. Overall, it's worth the money.
This is not a review of the attraction itself, unfortunately. Several days ago we drove from Sevierville believing that this place would be open. The reason that we thought it was open is because all that their social media and web presence says is "open 7 days a week". They have no voicemail greeting that says otherwise, nor does their web presence say anything about being CLOSED from November 16 through March 15. After driving 25 miles to get there, it wasn't until we arrived that we found out they were completely shut down, as did two other families who were also in the parking lot wondering why they had driven all the way out to be shut out. Upon leaving, out on the main road, we came across a big sign on the side of the road that said that they are open March 15 through November 15. Come on people, how hard is it to update your Facebook page and website to say the same thing!!!!!!!!!!! That's what your competitors do, and it would literally take you no more than a couple of minutes to put this information on the web. Total FAIL...
Not open 7 days a week!!!! No phone recording or website update advising that it isn't open from mid November to mid March. I would give this negative stars if possible as how difficult is it to update the website or make a phone recording???
Had a rainy day so decided to go here and spend some time. We were skeptical at first thinking we might be wasting our money but that changed very quickly. This place was awesome. The wife and I both had a great time along with our kids. They talked about it the whole trip. The time seemed to go fast while we were there since we were having such a great time. The guides were very entertaining and helpful with information. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area and will probably go back when we return.
We hit this place based on the reviews from TripAdvisor but when we first got out of the car, we were saying, "Okaaaaaaaaay." With the large, incredibly touristy gift shop straight from the 70's greeting you at the front door and the local fellas standing around watching TV off the the side, we were kinda wondering what was in store for us. Bottom line: The combination of the caverns and knowledgeable tour guide made for a great experience! My wife and I were both flabbergasted at how large the caverns were and just how much work the family who runs the place has put into it. But be prepared, you will need to take climb a few stairs which at times will be a bit awkward. And yes, sometimes the surfaces will be wet, but they have made them rough so footing (for me) was never an issue.
These caverns are beautiful and the tour well worth the money (I have been in numerous caverns over the years, some really great and some a waste of money!) The tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. We had 3 small children with us, one of which was in a carrier on my husband's back. We were told that there were a lot of stairs so it wasn't stroller friendly which was totally fine. We weren't told that the initial stairs that descend into the cavern are steep, narrow, uneven and wet! Throughout the cavern there are several spots where there is not a railing and a long drop down. We LOVED the caverns but would have probably forgone it this trip with 3 small kiddos if we had known a little more about the precariousness of it all. Definitely recommend for older children and adults!
An amazing cavern visit. Not commercial so seemed quite adventurous. Our tour guide was amazing and she was so knowledgeable about the cavern and its history that the discovery of it and the later development really came to life. It is a lot of steep stairs down and back out so be prepared for a workout. If you want an authentic experience going down into the caverns this is the right place.
Great guided tour of huge cavern. Ask to see the seismograph. Pretty cool! Great adventure for families.
We were up to see the fall colors and decided to take a look. This is NOT a national park, so it's nowhere near as antiseptic an experience. You'll get a little mud on your shoes and you'll have to duck to get through a couple of passages. The kids who are tour guides are great. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Bring a jacket, as it's cool underground. There is some stair climbing, so cardiac patients may want to think about it. It's going to run about $16 per person, but the formations are captivating. There's a stream running through it and they let you cup your hands and drink from it....how cool is that?
We saw the 'vintage', tourist trap looking signs on the highway, and then proceeded to pull up to the kitschy gift shop in front of the caverns, and really weren't sure what to expect. My guy told me that this was likely a disappointing tourist trap for sure, but we proceeded anyway. All I can say is, definitely visit this attraction. Incredibly interesting, accessible and fun experience for people of all ages and abilities. They really made the cavern accessible, without making it overly touristy (yes there are lights and a walkway, but still feels special). The Good:-Highly accessible-Great lighting to highlight the features-VERY friendly and interesting tour guides-BeautifulAll in all, it is worth the admission price and serves as a great use of about 1.5 hours of time when visiting the area.
The caverns were awesome will definitely be going back. The people were very friendly and our guide was very knowledgeable about the caverns
This place is loaded with cool sites and experiences! They give a great tour that takes around 30 - 45 minutes and they explain the geology and history behind the cave formations.. It's a must do when your near Townsend!
Pros: The caverns were absolutely beautiful. Our tour guide was informative. The tour last between 1-2 hours. Use restroom before tour. Two main attractions at both ends with awesome scenery along the way.Con: Group was too big with about 20 people. A bit expensive ($50 for 3 adult) but well worth it.
