The Home is beautiful, but there was glass over all the doors and the glare made it hard to see inside the rooms, plus you could not see the entire room. I understand it is to preserve but it was the only tour we took that had this, all the others had roped off areas which made it easier to see. There were several guides and as you went from one area to another the next guide would take over instead of one tour guide for the whole tour. The grounds and outer buildings were beautiful and well maintained. The outside is self guided with audio the tell about each area, The gardens and family cemetery were well maintained. Do not skip the film at the beginning, it is very interesting.
Sadly, the weather was awful when we visited, pouring rain, so we didn't enjoy the grounds as much as we'd have liked to. The tour was fabulous, and very interesting, the guides were very good. The whole layout and experience was fascinating, highly recommended.
The day we went it was very cold, so our tour was abbreviated by us. Toured a portion of the grounds (audio tour) on way to mansion, plus the graveyard and side areas. From the outside the mansion looks smaller than other mansions/plantations. The inside was a delightful spending the time with local tour guides explaining ever nuance of the building and the characters that lived in it. Andrew Jackson was a remarkable president and person, but had a side of him, that makes you cringe. Such as; He was an involved slave owner and was directly responsible for the famous Native American “Trail of Tears”.But he is a part of our history and if you have an extra morning or afternoon, it would not be wasted touring this historic home and area.
I've visited here twice now and this is a lovely place, with just the right mix of history, charm and beauty. Most of the tour is self guided, so you can explore the expansive grounds at your own pace and not be in a pack of people. You do go into the actual mansion with a group of people, about 15. This is where there's wonderful tour guides in period garb. The house has mostly original items inside and you walk the halls and upstairs. There are glass windows to the rooms, so they are better able to preserve the historic items, but you can see in quite well. I love the dining room and the beds. Once you exit the mansion you are on your own. The audio tour is nice, but it's up to each person. I like walking down to the spring, the slave quarters are an awakening and the gardens are beautiful. It is nice to pay your respects at the gravesites of the Jackson family. The gift shop is very nice as well. Many nice gift ideas.
3 of us had two hours to do this tour. Wish we had an extra hour! Since the tour was in march there were no lines and no crowds....wonderful! The mansion tour is great....they have guides in the various rooms of the house to tell you the history. When approaching the house and seeing all the out buildings you should either get the audio guide or the iPad type guide...both seem to be great. Hope to come back when I have more time to enjoy all this plantation has to offer
Learned so much about Andrew Jackson! Very well done museum and we did the audio tour. It was a rainy day but that had very little impact. The museum and home are fascinating. Well worth the price for this American history!
We took the audio tour but there are real persons in the mansion who, in their costumes, give a description of the various rooms, the history and interesting tidbits. And they answered any questions posed to them. There are also many exhibits and beautiful (in the summer!) gardens. It was worth the money.
If you appreciate authenticy you will love the tour, presentation and preservation at The Hermitage. The insight gained from this visit will give new respect for Jackson and his Presidency at a tumultuous time in US history. The glimpse into Jackson's personal life and relational depth is moving.
Set on a former cotton plantation, this Presidential home is a must see if you're a history buff. The Visitor Center is informative and the home is in pristine condition. Docents in costume are knowledgeable. Bring the kids - they'll learn something about the South during the early 19th century.
If you love Presidential history, then you will love this place. The house and the staff quarters were very cool to see, to understand this president. The drive way is shaped like a guitar, long before Nashville became music city. Worth the stop 100%
Lots of walking if you do the grounds, so wear walking shoes. The guided tour is the best or you can look around on your own.
This is a very well presented museum and historic estate that uses technology well- film and audio handsets to use throughout the tour of the mansion and grounds. There is no attempt to cover up or smooth over the unacceptable aspects of Jackson's life- the ownership of slaves etc- as some historical attractions do- and you get a sense of authenticity throughout. A great deal of attention to detail is paid throughout the mansion and site- guides are in period dress, there are written and audio guides to explain each point of interest. We visited in March and the grounds were still attractive- they must be very pleasant in the summer. It's a good insight into the life of Jackson and of the times. Worth a visit. The restaurant menu and the food we purchased is poor- quite the most limited and unappetising food we have had at an American attraction- the restaurant area itself is very pleasant- it is just the product that is poor- take your own food.
This is a great memorial to a former president, the visitor center is very nice and the house well maintained, the gardens are also very nice.
if you like your American history served up realistically, don't miss an opportunity to visit The Hermitage, Rachel and Andrew Jackson's house and grounds. before touring, be sure to watch the short film offered with the price of admission. the house and grounds have been meticulously researched and restored to very nearly the way it was during and after his Presidency. the gardens and family cemetery is also carefully maintained and the tour guides are top notch. highly recommend!
Amazing piece of our history! If you enjoy imagining what life was like many, many years ago this is the place for you! Beautiful home with original furniture owned and used by President Jackson! We even got to see the robe and slippers he actually wore! Lovely old trees dot the expansive property. Definitely a must see!
