As more and more wildlife habitat is being destroyed via urbanization, there are fewer natural places for native wildlife to thrive. As a result, places like Two Ponds are even more crucial. This National Wildlife Refuge is 1 of 500 throughout our country, and provides a valuable oasis for wildlife and people alike. The West side is open year round and the East May - September. During these periods, one can indeed enjoy it on ones own terms - and need no reservations to traverse the trails, explore the wild, take photos, have a picnic and experience nature in the middle of a town. Thankfully, it is no dog park (there are plenty of those elsewhere) - and a must visit for families and/or those wishing to reconnect with the natural world in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city.
It was early summer when we took our two granddaughters to the Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge. It's a relatively easy walk and you have your choice of two paths. The girls had a blast watching the fish in the pond as they were quite big and rather entertaining. They have little areas where you can stop and rest - which we did take advantage of them. Watching and listening to the red-winged black bird was a favorite. We walked leisurely and thoroughly enjoyed the journey with our grandchildren.
While I can appreciate a wildlife sanctuary in the middle of the city, you cannot do it on your own terms in one section of this Refuge. The majority of it is fenced off, you need to call for hours and visiting times, you can't get into it otherwise. The section you CAN get into is what they call the Prairie Trail. That consists of a walk around a field that has a bench. And, don't expect to bring a dog with you; dogs, even if on a leash, are not allowed. (even if you pick up after them) Although many times I have walked by and have seen dogs unleashed running thru there. Supposedly they have 'cameras' placed around the Prairie Trail. You would be better off visiting Van Bibber Open Space, in Arvada as well, with sidewalks, dirt trails and tons of wildlife that you can enjoy with your leashed pet.
