The wife and high took a break from losing money in the casinos to take a tour of the opera house and Tanner House. Lasted about 1 1/2 hours, great history lesson from the 1800's mining eras that started this whole town. Highly recommend.

this historic Opera House dates back to the gold rush days of Colorado's boom times. The area around the Opera House is quaint with Victorian homes, old shops, and many interesting historical sites. The rest of Central City is rather brash with its casinos and "not so good" eateries, but the Opera House and its adjoining Teller House Hotel are important parts of Colorado history and make for a very nice visit, with or without music. Summer music season is full of performances and workshops of all kinds, so be sure to check out the website! Don't be put off by "opera", it is a summer music joy. If you can see a full performance up there, the experience is amazing in the small acoustically sound Opera House; when the opera singers open up to full volume, hold onto your seats.. try it, I think you will like it on your way up I70 to many other mountain destinations.

Central City Opera is Colorado's most valuable cultural treasure, always presenting top quality productions. The Central City Opera House is the perfect venue. It is small enough to let every seat be involved in the show. Since the installation some years ago of theater seating and an evaporative cooler, it is comfortable no matter what the weather. The Opera House has such a distinguished history, with so many famous names among the list of singers who have performed there. A pleasant drive from Denver, this should be on everyone's list of Colorado sights. If you go once, you will go back.

This is the only part of Central City that is even recognizable from twenty years ago. In the name of gambling every shop and restaurant have disappeared both here and in Black Hawk. It is a real shame but if you want to gamble it's closer than Vegas.

The Central City Opera brought The Sound of Music to Denver at the Ellie Caulkin Theater. I really enjoyed it. The character of Maria was beautifully played. The children were WONDERFULLY cast. Beautifully done. My only issue with this play was the lack of chemistry between the Captain and Maria. The actor who played the Captain was flat. I understand that the character of the Captain was supposed to be stern in nature, but this was too much. There just was little emotional engagement between him and the other characters. I sound critical, but I really did love this play. It was a positive emotional experience and great entertainment.

We've had season tickets for a few years, and it's fun and exciting to see performances here. What wonderful shows we have seen, some classics like Madame Butterfly, musicals like Oklahoma, new operas like Three Decembers, Our Town, Dead Man Walking. Don't miss the Short Works performed in the old stable across the street before the opera, also the Notes presented by the assistant director about the opera. It's a small jewel, only about 500 seats, the acoustics are amazing, the performances are always just top notch. What a gem to have only 60 minutes from Denver.

You haven't seen anything until you have been to the Central City Opera. Acoustics are wonderful. The setting is amazing. It's an old historic theater in an old mining town in the foothill mountains. It sits over a river so in the old days they open the vents to cool the place with the air from the river. Historically all the famous people that made Colorado are listed on all the seats. Next door is the famous Teller house with the face on the barroom floor. The artist also painted in the basement of a house on 9th near the Botanic Gardens, the basement has portraits of all the famous people he practiced painting them on the walls of the basement.

Central City is an old mining town in the mountains. The restored old opera house is charming and the opera productions are of very high quality. The American opera "Dead Man Walking" was very moving. The singers have wonderful voices and are fine actors. Mozart's "'The Marriage of Figaro" is more light hearted and also excellent.There is an art gallery across the street that is fun to visit. The drive from Boulder to Central City is beautiful and there are several restaurants on the way. We have also had a picnic in the garden next to the opera house.

From the old "War Horses" to contemporary operas, Central City offer the highest quality productions in a glorious mountain setting! Wide variety of ticket prices, adjacent gardens and wonderful Rouge restaurant--it's an EVENT! Make your reservation & GO! Buy a parking ticket to make things easy!

We attended the dress rehearsal of Figaro and were amazed at the magnificent voices and set design. This is a MUST SEE this season. The chorus and principals created perfect vocal sounds that resonated throughout the historic opera house with great acoustics. The comedy plot, acting and orchestra will delight everyone. Food available nearby and enjoy the casinos while you are there.

Even if you don't gamble, a trip to Blackhawk/Central City is worthwhile. Great history, and the show here is top-notch.

We stopped at Central city for the casinos, but returned for the town itself. It is a restored mining town which burnt down and was rebuilt in brick to make it safer. The building remained and have been restored as casinos and shops. This is better than Virginia City in Nevada which gets much more publicity. There are brochures for three walking tours on the town which cover 50 buildings. There is a four lane road from Idaho Springs off of i-70 which makes it an easy stop.

The staging, the artists, the costumes, the energy all came together to provide a wonderful performance in this historic opera house.

I did a matinee, and what a treat! Loved the smallness of this Opera House...it made it so 'personal' and upclose. We saw Barber of Seville, which is a great 'beginner' opera. The production was superb. I loved being able to go out on the patio during intermission, such a beautiful area.I think any seat in the house would be good, so appeals to different pocketbooks!

This 550 seat 19th century opera house offers quality performances and a unique opportunity to see and hear them in a really intimate setting. My opera buff husband thought the musicians and singers in "The Barber of Seville" were impressive and marveled at how the performers managed so much well choreographed movement on a small stage. An opera here is a different experience than one performed by Opera Colorado and offers different pleasures, including the ability to see the performers' faces very clearly. The evening can please both opera enthusiasts and those with a more casual interest in opera. Pre-performance, enjoy a drink or light dinner at Kevin Teller's Rouge in the Teller House next door.
