We were driving along, exploring McElmo canyon when we were amazed to see vineyards in the most unlikely place. We drove down the dusty driveway and parked next to a large barn and beautiful abode home. We were the only ones there when we first arrived, so we were a bit unsure that we were in the right place, because we walked right into the owners' kitchen. We were warmly greeted by Ruth, who was quite a character, but knew her wines. We were very impressed at the great flavor of their offering (having tasted wines throughout California and Italy) and bought several bottles of their reds. Several other couples arrived while we were there, and the kitchen became pretty cozy.Their straw bale home is incredible, and worth the visit all by itself. The enclosed xeriscaped garden was beautiful and begged one to linger. The whole visit was a bit surreal-- this is not the type of climate or locale where one expects to find a vineyard and winery, but they have created a paradise where ancient Anasazi used to live among the Pinyon trees. Definitely go visit. You can also taste and buy their wines at Mesa Indian Trading Company and Gallery as you drive in the east side of Cortez.
We went to the winery a day after the Cortez Wine Festival. They had wonderful food, and great wine tasting. They also had a Celtic Band that was very enjoyable. We bought many bottles of wine because it was very good. I recommend it highly.
Guy Drew Winery is a nice place to stop and catch your breath after enduring all the crowds of Durango and Mesa Verde NP. This is very much a family operation and the warm hospitality of the family is refreshing. I love Rhone Style Blends and I really like the Syrah and Viognier. The Hostess was a lot of fun and offered up quite a bit of information on the area. I love their home and was made to feel very welcome. If you're in the Four Corner region you should visit this winery.
We had a fun, educational and entertaining visit at this welcoming local winery. It's very easy to find and the hosts invite you into their lovely home for the wine tasting. You will get to sip any or all of their offerings, no charge, but I can almost guarantee that you will leave with a bottle or more. We would go back just to have another opportunity to visit with these friendly owners.
