The old fashioned elevator alone is worth a stop by. be sure to visit the well preserved courtroom and imagine the grand oration of turn of the last century attorneys pleading their case. Be sure to check out the Van Bruggle pottery collection.
The Pioneer Musuem is located in a historic building in downtown Colorado Springs. This musuem does a nice job of covering some of the early history of the Springs. There is a full size courthouse on the upper floor that has a classic "Gunsmoke" type feel. One of the interesting exhibits is on frontier medicine, with medical and dental instruments and Rx chemicals. Colorado Springs was once known for treating TB patients. There are also lots of firearms from the wild wild west. They have found a nice mixture of things for kids and parents. The museum reflects the passion for local history of a handful of folks who have created an excellent facility. We lived in Colorado Springs for 25 years and this was on the must see list for visitors, with many relatives asking to go back.
This is an interesting museum for history buffs. exhibits change frequently, so check website. It has a good history of city and Pike's Peak races.
If you are in the area at Christmas, the lights decorating the Pioneers Museum are an added bonus to this nice little museum. Just big enough to give a taste of history, but not big enough to bore the children to tears.
I was amazed by the quality of this free museum. With local area artifacts and history displayed, this is not what you would expect from a city owned museum. Enjoyl
I love history and love going to a museum which will give me a good feel of the local history. Plenty of information on the notable figures from the early days and covered too the history of black Americans who moved to this region after being freed from slavery. There was an excellent and moving display on the terrible bush fire that occurred a couple years back.Friendly staff.
Great venue to spend a morning or afternoon. History of Colorado Springs all in one location, exhibits are excellent, building itself is worth going, courtroom upstairs from the late 1800's is a trip back in history.
What a beautiful place to house a Pioneer Museum. The renovated courthouse is a sight to see all it's own. There are many exhibits and the one about the fires in 2014 was very touching, brought tears to my eyes. In addition, there are several more exhibits that are under construction and will open within the next few months.I will definitely be back to see those as well. The restored court room is magnificent. Since admission is free, it's a great place to bring the whole family including the kids.
I am so thankful that someone had the fore-thought to save the history of our town. This is a wonderful museum. The staff is friendly and there is so many cool things to learn about Colorado Springs and the area here. They are updating and changing frequently so it is not the same exhibits.
What a GREAT find, right downtown! I can't believe we lived in town for over a year before visiting this GEM of a museum. The staff was so friendly, and my young daughter loved doing the museum scavenger hunt. I personally LOVED the CO photography room. My daughter loved the interactive room learning about the Ute Indians. The CO wildfire exhibit brought tears to my eyes. We will surely bring visitors there in the future. HIGHLY recommended for all ages or even a date without the kids.
The courthouse building itself is a great piece of history and architecture, and the displays are relevant to the history of Colorado Springs from its beginnings to the current day. A must see for residents of Colorado Springs, and an easy visit for travelers looking to know more about the area. Friendly staff and lots of great places to eat nearby. Metered parking available adjacent to the building.
We were truly impressed with this valuable landmark in Colorado Springs. We have lived in the Springs for 16 yrs and have visited here twice before . The biggest and best addition to this museum is on the Waldo Canyon fire. We were emotionaly touched by the many displays on the fire's impact on our resident's lives.....it made us proud to be part of this wonderful community. Kudos to those who put this presentation \display together....well done!
Since this museum is free, it is worth stopping in for a quick visit. There are exhibits for children and adults. I like the exhibit on the Waldo Canyon fire.
This museum is NOT to be missed when visiting Colorado Springs!! It is a fantastic museum and FREE!!! It is in a restored courthouse that is absolutely charming! Make sure you take the elevator.....wonderful vintage elevator! The exhibits are beautiful and such care was put into them. The staff and volunteers at the museum were also wonderful! The gentleman at the entrance was very helpful as was the security guard who clearly LOVED the museum. I asked him a question he didn't know the answer too but later he found me and he had the answer! AWESOME! I really enjoyed this museum and it helped me to understand the area quite a lot!
There is a play room with a small train, tee pee, and wagon for young children and a wonderful history museum for older children and adults and it's free!
