We love this art center in an historic building in Golden. There are several exhibits throughout the year and a great holiday art/craft show from Thanksgiving through the end of the year. We always find great and unique Christmas gifts, from fiber creations to jewelry and blown glass Christmas decorations.
Great small museum that shows world-class art in a lovely environment. Well worth the time to visit.
The Foothills Art Center is located in the attractive downtown of Golden. It is located in an attractive vintage building just a few blocks uphill from the bustling main street. The gallery is small, but well laid out. Each year there are a series of well-curated shows with uniformly high quality of art. The artwork covers a wide range and includes painting, sculpture and wood. There is a popular holiday season show. The entrance fee is reasonable. The small gift shop has interesting items. The grounds are attractive and shady with eye-catching public art. Well worth a stop.
Was encouraged to seek out this art center and take in the 2014 Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Show. Terrific. The body of work was top notch. Will be top of my list each time I get to the Denver area. A lovely drive from Denver.
The Foothills Art Center is a sort of a hidden gem in Golden. It's located 3 or 4 blocks UP the hill from downtown Golden but is worth the walk (or climb). The Art Center has a nice collection of local/regional art and periodic special exhibitions.Worth spending a hour or two.
Admittedly it was unexpected & incongruous to find an extraordinary exhibit of Toulouse Lautrec & la Vie Moderne in the Colorado mountains, but this little jewel of a regional museum in a former church ranks with major players in more urban settings. Accompanied by an informative film & beautifully displayed in attractive stark white galleries, fine French art-not often seen in the US-seemed right a home in the Rockies & although a hard act to follow, it will be interesting to learn what's featured next at Foothills. Original cards & souvenirs in the well-stocked gift shop enhanced the exhibit.
I had never been to this museum before but wanted to see Henri's work. They had a very informative movie on his life and work, a nice selection of his works. They also had many other French impressionist works. It was great, only $15 to get in. I wish they would had sold more of his work in their gift shop.
A very worthwhile stop. An intimate place to see any exhibit they offer that might be of interest. At this time, in the main gallery, an extremely interesting, well curated Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit including an array of artists from the end of the 1800's in, mainly, Paris with an excellent video that explores the period. But in a larger sense, this art center is a worthwhile stop; a wonderful, cozy and professionally run gallery in a series of historic buildings that shows a variety of exhibits of both local and international art and artists. I've enjoyed the art center every time I've visited.
We went to the holiday show here, a great craft offering for Christmas. We found lots of gifts for others and for ourselves. This is an old church that has been transformed and always has something of interest to see.
This art center is in a small former church, but sometimes, as for the textile exhibit, items are on display at the building next door. I always enjoy whatever they show and it is a must place for gift ideas before Christmas :-)
This was our second choice stop in Golden after the Coors Brewery tour but we skipped Adolph's creation because of the long waiting time (1.5 hours) and took in the Art Center instead. No regrets about that decision. For the $3 price of our seniors' admission, we saw a remarkably diverse exhibition of textiles worked into many different forms and we used a handily provided mallet to ring some of the contemporary metal sculptures outside. The textiles are a temporary exhibit but the sculptures remain as an excellent addition to Golden's many other examples of outdoor public art. Since the whole town is swarming with sculptures that feature mainly historical characters and lifestyles, they make a fine add-on reason for visiting Golden. (Keep an eye peeled for Mr. Coors and his graffitied embellishment on a downtown street corner.) The Art Center is located in a former Presbyterian Church with a remarkable polished wood floor and theologically neutral stained glass windows. It is small and could easily be viewed in a half hour or so but many may want to linger. On the Saturday afternoon we visited it was not overrun with people and one of the very helpful and knowledgeable guides was knitting in a rocking chair on the porch. The gift shop sells unusual items like woven structures in the shape of small adobe houses that can be used as containers and fabric trees with twisted foliage. When you are tired there is a Himalayan tea house next door where yak is on the menu.
Easy to find, reasonable and free parking and excellent content. I am not an "art person" as such but went in with some friends who are - so visited essentially for social reasons. I was pleasantly surprised to find the display areas were well lit, the place was quiet and invited a meditative contemplation. Later I found out that it used to be a church. I was not paying attention to the outside of the building as we walked in. Visit their website, http://foothillsartcenter.org, to get a sense of what special exhibits they might be having.
My friend and I happened upon the FAC while spending a couple of days in Golden. The Colorado Watercolor Society exhibit was going on, and it was fabulous. The Center was also advertising for an upcoming Degas exhibit.
I went to the Foothills Art Center to see the Chihuly exhibit. It is a tiny place with a limited parking capacity. The staff was not very friendly.
They are gettings significant shows in the past few years, and they always do a great job of carrying local art for sale in many different mediums.
