hermit's rest

It is a 3 mile down and then on the way back 3 miles up. The trail is well maintained but be prepared for a good workout since elevation change between trailhead and the end of the trail at the Hermit Rest is about 1800 ft. I wouldn't recommend this hike to someone who is not prepared for such significant elevation change. There are a few benches along this trail for those who need to rest. The views from the overlook at the trailhead are already very impressive. At the end of the trail there are campsites right near the water edge and there is also a restroom. There were no campers and it didn't look anybody camped there for some time. Hence this would be a really nice spot for a picnic lunch. During my hike only one couple passed me while going down.It was a lovely quiet 6 mile hike. After this hike I added another but much shorter (4 miles round trip) hike down to Curecanti Creek. This viewpoint into the eastern portion of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison from its north rim is worth a stop. There are better views many miles down the road in the park itself, but this will whet your appetite for what is to come. I couldn't resist including a photo of the "site attendant" squirrel that rests in the shade of the wooden fence and hopes for handouts.
