Started in St Elmo up towards Tin Cup Pass. We thought we may have made a mistake half way up in our stock SUV but managed to make it to the pass. We smartly decided to head back the way we came and were glad we did when we read about the backside to the town of Tin Cup was more difficult. Blew out a sidewall about 1/2 a mile from St Elmo. We were lucky to be on a relatively flat portion of the road and were able to change our tire. A great adventure but next time we'll be in a jeep with more clearance!Dan and PhyllisDenver, CO
Took the road over the mountain via Tincup to go to Mirror Lake. Nice little village and has a RV park, too. A bit far off for me to stay longer but who likes it quiet - check Tincup out. And its Whiskey definitely! :)
just a few quaint houses and an interesting country store in a pretty high mountain valley. There is a scenic road that leads form TIn Cup over the pass and into the historic town of Pitkin.
A small village in an awesome mt valley is all that remains of a once roaring mining boom town. Surrounded by beautiful peaks and the Gunnison National Forest, there are old miner's cabins, a very decent cafe for breakfast and lunch (try the Tincup Pie), a General Store, and an old cemetary. Definitely don't visit if you have trouble with altitude, this place clocks in at 10,000 ft.
We ended up in Tin Cup by error when we took an incorrect turn. This "Ghost Town" caters to ATV lovers and doesn't appear to offer much else.
10,000 feet and counting. People lived here in the 1800's. Eat at Frenchys and ATV your way to the higher peaks.
Don't miss the cemetery. Ask in town how to get their. Also, if Frenchy's is open, it's a great place for lunch.
We go to Tin Cup annually, and this year took a friend of ours and went in on ATVs from the Pitkin side. Great trip that was capped with a stop at Frenchies Cafe for peach pie. This year on our trip on a Thursday, Tin Cup was packed! Most people I have ever seen there.
This is such a neat little place! Being here is like stepping back in time! The people are all friendly, salt-of-the-Earth types who really care about where they live. My husband and I stopped here for lunch and had a really great experience at KaCyn's BarBQue food truck! We are both from Texas originally, and have very strong opinions about BarBQue. We really enjoyed the food, and the atmosphere! Highly recommend it!
This place is LOST in time. WOW it is off the grid. Don't expect many conveniences. Hard to believe people live here in winter.
Beautiful scenery and many trails to jeep, cycle or ATV in! Sun, snow, warm and cool weather all in one! Loved it!
I love this place. We attend church here every Sunday during the summer at the Tin Cup community chapel and as a matter of fact, that is were my wife and I were married! Just up the road about three miles is Mirror Lake and Tin Cup pass in one direction or Cumberland Pass in another direction. Both offer spectacular views and great hiking trails. The other direction lays the beautiful Taylor reservoir, Ice Mountain and Taylor Canyon. The only negative about this place is the four wheelers, the are crazy. But they mostly show up in July, so from May, June and around mid August it can be pretty quiet. As for food, I love Frenchy's Cafe, Diane makes a great hamburger and a great breakfast. We even bought a convertible just so we can see the colors of the trees during the fall better!Seriously, this is one of my favorite places in the world.
We cycled from our campsite about 20 miles away and it would have been really scenic except that all the speeding ATVs plus some other traffic were going too fast and throwing up way too much dust. The lady that ran the little trailer barbecue place that had food and hot chocolate was super nice and really knew the local history.Cemetery was a scenic location and very interesting.
When we are in Colorado, close to Buena Vista, we drove over Cottonwood Pass and on over to Tincup CO for lunch. KaiCyn's Fine Smoked BBQ (across the road from Frenchys Cafe) had some of the best smoked brisket around. She only takes cash, so to be sure and take some cash with you.
Tin Cup is history live. Nearly all the building in Tin Cup are a century old. Some modern facilities have been added, but exploring Tin Cup is like taking a step back into history.
