kit carson museum

Kit Carson is named after the man himself. It became an important railroad terminal (Kansas Pacific) picking up mostly cattle from several trailheads and bringing supplies to Colorado, NM and Arizona. Eventually, the rails to Denver were completed, which severely affected Kit Carson. However, the place has survived and now has a population between 200-300 hardy souls. The museum hosts several displays dedicated to the region and well as to KC (town) itself.. including a great arrowhead collection, farming tools, older machinery, etc. There is a depot, a rail car, and a barn holding lots of older equipment. Don't forget to explore the barn part. It's across the street to the south.Since the town is so small.. know the 9am-5pm open times are negotiable.. meaning possibly 9:30-10:00 opening.. lol. If you're lucky.. Ruby will be working (volunteering) and she is a hoot. She grew up in the area and raised her family there. She taught me something about museums.. something to take with me. Museums aren't just for us now.. but for future generations who can see how they (and we) lived in the past. So, absorb what this museum has to offer for it's unusually low price (free). Donations are accepted if one is so inclined.The museum is owned by the Kit Carson Historical Society and easily found on the main highway where the sign indicates.. just look for the yellow rail car in front.
