Francisco Fort, nestled in the small town of La Veta, Colorado, is an original piece of history that has been a part of the area since 1862. The original fortified trading center property has been expanded with historical buildings from the area. Surviving also is a cottonwood tree that is over 130 years old. Stop by for quick visit or spend several hours exploring the many and varied exhibits from earliest pottery shards and arrowheads to the very earliest 20th century household items! Interesting for the entire family!
We were pleasantly surprised by the extent of historical materials to see and learn about at this authentic fort. We even learned watched someone making authentic stucco out of mud to repair the fort. The folks working there were very enthusiastic about the fort and the exhibits and shared a lot of their knowledge. Great little nugget in this quaint town.
This museum has an amazing number of exhibits, and each exhibit has an amazing number of artifacts. It is well worth visiting, and plan to spend at least a couple of hours if you can. Don't miss the medical room, or the school house!
Just when you think you've seen it all, there in La Veta is the best kept secret of time travel, everything there is from there, the pottery shards, the arrowheads, the wheel for grinding flour. The compound itself with school house, the saloon, the blacksmith area. This is as great as the Smithsonian only everything is in place the history is swirling around you. Such a rich experience,it is hands on, able to touch somethings and examine others closely. The volunteers are amazing and very knowledgable. We thought we would spend a couple of hours and be on our way. We left after 3 hours reluctantly. If you have kids they to will be engaged, the old one room school house, the forge area, the displays are accessible for kids. We came back and are telling everyone we know they should go and see, and do. That the trip is an easy one and full of adventure for any age.
Visited Fort Francisco Museum in La Veta CO last week. We have visited many times before but had not been for quite some time. We brought one group of 4 of our Grandchildren ages 11 to 4. They all enjoyed it very much. We took them at the request of their Mother who remembers going there with us when she was a child. The staff could not have been more helpful even to the point if impromptu tours and demonstrations of some of the b exhibits. We ran out if time to see everything but I'm sure we will be back.
Francisco Fort Museum, centered in La Veta, is truly the beginning of the town's history. Walking through the old plaza makes it easy to travel back in time. Visit when you have time to linger and explore.
Touring can be tiring. When in LaVeta, CO take the time to visit the Fort Francisco Museum. While there take a few minutes to sit under the giant tree in the courtyard planted by Col. Francisco himself. The stop here will refresh your spirit and give you a feel of a quieter time.

This place is hands on and accessible - needed a whole day to take it all in - great history and antiquities - absolutely brilliant.
Museum captured many aspects of La Veta and environs history, from first settlers, to mining days, and many glimpses of La Veta's past. Tour guide Chance was very good and attentive. Deer on premises. Much of museum is haunted. Was convinced when of spirits, when I mysteriously fell through porch in front of saloon. A little bit of a weird experience, but fortunate did not sustain any injury, just great surprise. Tour was well worth time.
This is an unexpected treasure in La Veta. It was great to see so many old family treasures so well preserved.
Excellent history preserved. This is a gem for any city. Well maintained and very helpful volunteers. If you go through La Veta, take an hour.
You will not believe all the holdings of this Museum. It is a gem hidden in the center of LaVeta and well worth uncovering with a visit. The entry fee is quite reasonable. The old fort is the original adobe fort and it houses local history and artifacts that tell the story of the region. Our guide was knowledgeable and affable, answered our questions, and patiently waited as we examined room after room and building after building. There is even a saloon, a blacksmith shop, and a firehouse on the grounds. We have seen many local museums on our travels, but this one stands out as one of the best! You may even catch a glympse of a deer or two as they roam at will through the town. They are known to stop by the Francisco Fort Museum from time to time.
