Short on time we opted for this museum instead of the larger National Mining Museum (will definitely allow time next trip) If you want a well present timeline presentation this is the museum stop for you
The museum is housed in the old Carnegie Library, and the architecture is amazing. Loved the display about the 10th Mountain guys, and they have a decent book store. Lots of photos, but the displays lack information about the details. Each display has a card that gives the overall description, but not enough of the individual items in the display. Has a scale model of the Ice Palace which is interesting, but as a claim to fame for the town? It lasted 3 months and lost money. Mining was a big part of the museum, which is to be expected, but we found the rest much more interesting. Would recommend it as a stop, since you can never have too much history.
the best mineral sample exhibits I have ever seen--lots of mining stuff, including a walk-through simulated underground mine--well worth the time it took to walk through
Most old mining towns in Colorado have their local museum - and Leadville is no different. The person who was working on the particular day I visited was very plesant and freindly - but the museum is not that exciting EXCEPT for the collection of photographs. There are some great portraits of performers, prostitues, and other characters. This musuem can be done in an hour - the other review written I think was foir the Mining Heritage Musueum - not this museum. Make sure you see the old buildings in the yard - along with that mining equipment. It is $6.00 per person. My rateing is somewhere between average and very good...
Could stay all day. This museum is a converted school, huge! Learned so much here. We spent 3 hours and it wasn't enough time. We'll go back someday. Chock full of new information, lots of photos, machinery, general mining information. They are doing a great job here at this museum!
