The Limon Wetlands Preserve should be a genuine star in Limon's crown, together with a should-be-lovely walking trail that leads from the in-town cemetery to the edge-of-town wetlands. But it is apparent that no one cares to maintain the trail or the wetlands viewing area. We needed the exercise in the middle of a long two-day road trip, so off we went, but the trash along the way was seriously off-putting, as were the hundreds of barn swallows buzzing by if you dared go through the tunnel that is the only way to get to the Preserve. I only persuaded my wife to go through the tunnel by first going ahead and noisily shooing the birds away.
We stayed in Limon on the night of April 30,and I walked from our motel to the wetlands park, which is well-illustrated on the town's website. The wetlands were recreated from a former sewage treatment facility. Don't worry, there was no objectionable smell. For details of the plant and animal life, refer to the town's website. Unfortunately I did not have binoculars, and missed some of the more secretive waterfowl. The most striking sight was the hundreds of yellow-headed blackbirds roosting around the wetlands at sunset. Also visible were an American Coot, redwing blackbirds, and a few mallards. I suspect there were more. Limon has good amenities for an overnight stay, so bring binoculars or a spotting scope and enjoy the birds!
