Black Canyon is an amazing spot - the dark gneiss cliffs are striking. Very little of the rim road is open in the winter (just two stops), but you can walk down to the Gunnison viewpoint. With ice climbing equipment and experience, you can still attempt to hike the down to the river.
I much prefer the Black Canyon to the Grand Canyon because you can relax & enjoy yourself & its beauty. No distractions. No crush of people in a hurry. Just pure natural beauty. Also feel that the Grand Canyon is just too, too breathtaking to fully appreciate.
The rangers were very informative and friendly. Nice exhibits and movie. We enjoyed the walkway to go down to get a closer look at the Black Canyon and take pictures.
BCNP is open and free in the winter, making it an excellent place to cross-country ski or snowshoe. Seeing the Black Canyon with some snow on its rims and rock faces is well worth the 20 minute drive to get there. When it's open, I like to drive down East Portal road (a thrill in and of itself) and access the Gunnison River in the gorge. It's spectacular. A must go, anytime of year.
Black Canyon is a can't miss stop winter or summer. People from all over the world stop for the amazing views
Awesome! It's like a little grand canyon....keep the kids close however because their are some dangerous spots without fences....just beutiful!
We were on a bus tour to the Park, so stayed on the 11km long South Rim Road and visited several lookouts. The views were unspoiled and spectacular and quite accessible for those with mobility issues. There was quite a nice little visitor centre. Of course there is a big range of more active activities available for those who are able to spend more time in the Park - some of the trails looked very interesting.
Much of the park is closed in the winter but what was able to be seen was great. Information center was open and nice.
mostly unknown place where you can see the most awesome views of nature that you will never forget. The sights of what nature has done should make the Grand Canyon blush with envy.
Black canyon is often overlooked here in montrose, however our parks and rec district make it one of the cleanest places to visit. It would be easy to spend days following all the trails and paths or the great fishing most of the year. Black canyon has easy trails that take you to great views and difficult trails that are steep and could prove dangerous to children, elderly or inexperienced hikers most have steps and or a clear path marked out. Black canyon in montrose is overall one of the easiest to access and fun parks.
We visited fairly early in the morning and there was a mist over the canyon which made it look quite eerie but was great for photos. There were several trails to walk and the visitor centre was really interesting. Definitely worth visiting!
The back story is too long for this review but the last time we visited Black Canyon it was a National Monument and we had more than our share of distractions which prevented our having a good visit. It was nice to be back and to enjoy the awesome vistas within the park. If time permits, take the road down to the river on the east side of the park. The road turns off to the right immediately after you leave the entrance station. Granted, the road has some of the steepest grades permissible for passenger vehicles but if you use caution and stay in lower gears, it is worth the trip. You will see the top of Crystal Dam, the construction of which created quite an environmental stir. You can also see the inlet where a tunnel takes Gunnison River through the mountains and out to the agricultural land around Montrose.Highly recommended. Lots of Prairie Dogs for the kids to see and some very nice hikes.
I live 20 minutes away from the park & I never get tired of visiting. Canyon changes all of the time. If our visitors have only a short time, we take them here & they're never disappointed. Winter is beautiful.
A breathtaking National Park! This mini Grand Canyon, with a great history & story to be told. This National Park not being as well known as thy Grand Canyon makes it less crowded & easier accessible. Make sure when you visit to go to the visitors center first to watch the 20 minute video about it's history. The canyon is simply breathtaking.
Scenery, wildlife, hiking and fewer visitors at the park made this a trip to remember. Drove to bottom of canyon and walked along Gunnison river. Only a few fishermen along the way. Saw mule deer below and along the top ridge of the canyon
