Having a degree in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation and loving fly fishing it was a no brain er. My daughter loved it. We were greeted by a nice Biologist who was originally from the Chicago area. He was very friendly and pointed out the ponds and runs and their explained their mission. Afterwards gave us some food to feed the fish. The water boiled with hungry fish! Very much worth the stop!
My kids love fish and we always have to check out the hatchery when we are around one. They have a large place with lots of little fish. The staff I spoke with was very friendly and informative.
Our large family decided visit the hatchery on our annual vacation to Salida. The video was pretty neat and feeding the trout was fun too. Just don't expect to be there for more than an hour.
Uncrowded on the day we were there in mid-Aug. Video presentation on the history of the hatchery and then the opportunity to tour the rearing ponds and feed the fish.Time well spent for my grandaughters (ages 9 and 11) both for entertainment and educational value.
There were two pools of small trout. Not worth visiting, but nearby is a small lake with wonderful views - a good spot for a picnic.
This is a large fish hatchery and provides walking on flat ground to view the various fish ponds and concrete fish containers. The hatchery person on duty was just wonderful - gave our granddaughters pails of fish food to scatter to the fish and spent time talking with us about how the hatchery works - he even gave us a dead mouse to feed to the large trout!
Although we visited at a time when it's just as the 2013 season is ending, we still were treated to a most informative little talk from one of the staff as well as seeing a short video on the history and functions of the hatchery. Our group of 16 senior folks got a big kick out of feeding the fish as well.
The price was right, Free. the staff was awesome and very informative. Well worth the drive over! the kids will enjoy feeding the fish.
This is a fun little family see. the guide was welcoming and knowledgeable, and getting to see the fish hatchery was a real treat. feeding the fish is the best part for any kid - seeing the fish jump & the differences between the trout breeds makes for great conversation with the little ones. take 30 minutes, it's worth the drive over.
We spent some time here recently and it was an enjoyable experience. A short informative video about the hatchery is worth a watch and it was quite the sight to feed those hungry trout! I'd recommend it if you have an extra 30mins in the area.
Greeted at door by helpful staff. We watched video about the hatchery and they gave us food for the fish. Kids had a ball walking around feeding them. The facility is not much to look at but it is free family fun, can't beat that
Pleasant and helpful employees.....gave us fish food to feed the fish.....showed us a 7 minute video on how they raise the fish.....very fun day!
What a great family activity! After a short, informative video you are free to tour the grounds and feed the trout in several different concrete runs. Interesting and educational. Handouts are provided for the younger folk to complete and color. I picked up a supply for the grandkids.
The quick video, q&a with the guide, and visitor's center were very informative! It's great info for someone who fishes (or eats the fish of ) Colorado. Kids loved feeding the 1000's of fish. A good 30minute-1 hr stop. Make sure to donate a few bucks!
I am an avid fly fisherman and my son (4 y/o) is getting into fishing as well. Our family went to the hatchery for a visit, combined with a walk around the neighboring Frantz Lake. A nice 2 hour outing. The hatchery has a visitor office with displays of many kinds of trout and other fish. A 10 minute video offers interesting information about the history of the hatchery and about how rivers and high mountain lakes get stocked. But the highlight of the visit was surely getting a Folgers coffee can with fish food, and being able to wander around the hatchery feeding the fish :)
