Great effort was given to gather and index artifacts from Victor's place in the history of the gold rush starting in the late 1800's. A part of our nation's heritage has been preserved. Additionally, Lowell Thomas grew up in Victor and significant items from his life as a news reporter, author and world traveler have been arranged for the enjoyment of visitors to the museum.

Famed newsman Lowell Thomas lived in Victor for much of his childhood and youth, although he was not born here. His father was a doctor here. On the corner of Victor Avenue and Third Street is the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum. The old building is in bad shape; a fire on the main floor has resulted in many of the best displays being off limits. Don't put a contribution in the box because you will have to pay to get into the museum. The small amount of the first floor still open (aside from the gift shop) has a few displays about Victor's mining history. Up the creaky stairs is a part of the building that was clearly an old hotel. Here you will find some memorabilia about Lowell Thomas, including an old teletype, one room set up as his father's medical office, and so forth. I guess you have to like this sort of thing to think this place is worthwhile. It's okay, but I wouldn't go back a second time. Of course, I suppose most Americans today don't even know who Lowell Thomas is, which is too bad...he was an interesting character whose history is linked with Lawrence Of Arabia.
