Tucked deep in the recess of an outdoor Modern-Sculpture garden you find the original and historic Denver Public Library. Surrounded by the Denver Museum of Art and numerous other cultural gems is huge new modern public library. This massive public research sn cultural center stems form the roots of its original victorian era building. Late in the 20th century the library was expanded to serve the growing needs. With a stroke of brilliance the original vintage library was attached to to create a new asn modern facility while preserving asn honoring the historical route this library has taken it patrons. It would be easy to miss this library existence given the huge flamboyant building that surround it. But once decreed fully. It is one of the finest gems in the city , state or region...
No matter who you are and what you look like the staff of the library are welcoming. They will go our of their way to attend to the reading needs of their patrons. They are creative in offering classes and information that speak directly to the varied interests in Denver's population
There are a ton of branches, and you can request whatever you want to have picked up wherever you want.
Extraordinary number of volumes and if you want it, they can get it. Very helpful staff. Plenty of places to sit and chill and browse.
This is a massive and beautiful public library. Took the elevators up to the top floor where the HR offices are, just to look out the windows, great views. This library has it all, books and media beyond belief, comfy furniture to hang out on while reading, nice location near many other attractions. Would be a great place to just relax in between more physical activities if traveling through, old or young.
Should a tourist go to the library? It depends on what kind of a tourist you are,but I'd advise you to check out the DPL website to see what it has to offer while you are in town. Free movies, knitting circles, concerts, cooking demonstrations, and much more are available for people of all ages. The building itself is a work of art. Look carefully to see where the old and the new have become one. There are great views of the city and the mountains from inside as well. Check out the views and programs even if you can't check out a book.
Denver's Library is right in the middle of everything. The reading rooms are lovely and a great spot to check out a book and enjoy some quiet time. The Western History Library is one of the be genealogical resources any where, and the are very helpful. Explore the iconic architecture and look out the windows for Denver Landmarks all around. If you're staying downtown, The Library, Denver Art Museum, the Kirkland Museum and Colorado History Museum are all right there together, across the street from the Court Buildings, the Capital, and the Civic Center.
I made a special trip to find my family history and in searching, found a photo of one of my ancestors, it was worth the 7 hr drive one way.
The Denver Public Library's central location is an awesome place to visit! Lots of materials and spaces to read. It's worth seeing even if one does not plan on checking out anything.
We researched 17 archival record boxes of information about a Denver company we brought back to life in 1997.We assisted an author who is writing a book about the Phillipson Rod CO.
The Denver Public Library is a great resource. The genalogical section (Western History?) is very good to support work done at the Federal Center's Federal Archives nearby.
We were tipped off while at the Kirkland Museum that the library had a nice art collection so checked it out. They indeed were having two separate shows in their dedicated gallery spaces and also had a nice collection throughout the facility, particularly on the history floor adjacent to one of the galleries. Worth checking out!
Must visit if you have time. The children section is very nicely done. Tour the building first. It is one of Michael Graves successful buildings.
Tucked away next to the Denver Art Museum, this piece of Denver history not only has survived time it has been updated so you can see history and the future allin one astounding piece of architecture. Never mind the world class collection of books and media. This classic building from a n era long gone is a building that is secretly nestled among other super modern and adventeruous pieces of a building art.
Love the downtown library. Most people don't know this, but the top floor houses a beautiful table where world leaders sat during the Summit of Eight when Clinton was in office. Great floor for looking at local art, especially Western pieces. Good view of Denver from this top floor.
