Stopped by and had a real nice chap,,,who it turns out had a connection to NH where we were from. He gave us some tips on a few good watering holes, places to grab some grub and a place to hang our hats....even though we werent whereing hats , we dont eat grub and we were looking for beer not water. Anyway....nice guy all the same and we really enjoyed talking with him, worth a stop, if only to pick up a free pack of Altitude sickness aid powder. Thanks!!!!....My head is glad to be back at 2,100 feet.
I spent a week in Crested Butte in spring and also in fall, and stopped by Chamber of Commerce a few times. I've never been treated so rudely and it really was a waste of time. I was looking for information on the area in general, and the wildflower festival. The volunteer ? never greeted anyone arriving, didn't ask if anyone needed help or had questions, and couldn't give me details on anything I inquired about. I received more info from shop owners than from the chamber. When I discovered in town, there was a map of best viewing sites for wildflowers, I returned to the chamber asking for it. He argued with me and said they didnt' have anything. When I told him I had seen one in town and described it, he reluctantly gave me one. Not sure what was going on with this chamber, but I have never felt so unwelcomed and unwanted before as a traveler. The entire town bordered on rudeness also. As though they wanted the income, but resented the people. The farmer's market is absolutely the BEST I have ever attended though.
My husband and I scheduled a couples massage at Creekside Spa for a recent trip to Crested Butte. While our time in Crested Butte was wonderful - the people, the accommodations, the fall foliage - our experience with Creekside Spa left much to be desired. Due to a family emergency, my husband and I had to leave early and were unable to make our couples massage. However, as soon as I could, I replied to the confirmation e-mail which was sent to me a few days before to explain the problem. At 6:10 pm (our massage was at 6:00 pm) I received a call asking if we would be keeping the appointment. I explained that due to a family emergency we would not be able to keep the appointment and explained that I had sent an e-mail. Monday morning I received a very rude phone call asking me to pay $90 for the missed appointment. A cancellation fee was not discussed at the time the appointment was made; nor stated when the initial phone call was recieved. I explained the circumstances thinking that there would be some sympathy and understanding for our situation. There was not. I would not recommend this spa and will not seek their services again when I visit Crested Butte the next time.
Be forewarned: You CANNOT PLAN a vacation to Crested Butte. I will elaborate on why this is, but first, I will preface this review by saying that I have never one-starred an establishment before. I always try to be fair/helpful and the one-star is the nuclear-bomb of reviews. However, I feel compelled to send a message to the town and anyone who may read this review.Around April, my girlfriend and I decided to book a trip to Colorado, intending to revisit two destinations (Ouray and Crested Butte) that we had traveled to the previous year but couldn't really enjoy because of inclement weather. Our vacations tend to be activity intensive with lots of hiking when we go to the mountains. Crested Butte has some decent hikes in the surrounding areas, but is mostly known for its mountain biking. Since we enjoyed it so much the year before, we decided to make sure that our trip coincided with the Crested Butte Chili-Beer Fest, as advertised on their Chamber of Commerce/Facebook websites, and booked flights accordingly. We quickly roped in eight other family members/friends to join us in Crested Butte with the promise us hiking, biking, and a great festival. We booked a VBRO for $2500. Everyone else booked flights (from Florida).Early August rolls around...Here's where things start to run amok. The dates for the Chili-Beer Fest are mysteriously changed, not once, but twice in one week. The problem is that the festival is now no longer scheduled to be within our travel window. I call the Chamber of Commerce to find out why the dates moved and make sure that there isn't some sort of mistake. They tell me they have no idea what happened...REALLY? I wonder...So we break the news to our group that the festival dates have moved and that there is still plenty of fun stuff to do in Crested Butte. We'll make do.Upon arriving Colorado, about five days before we get to Crested Butte, we are contacted by the VBRO booking agent and informed that the town will indeed be having a festival that weekend, and that the entire main street (where all of the restaurant, bars and shops are located) will be cordoned off. The festival, which turns out to be the Bud Light WHATEVER Festival, has apparently been kept a secret from the public while the town negotiated the details. Anyone over the age of 21 will be allowed inside the fences. Ok, so fine: we didn't plan a trip to Colorado to drink supermarket beer we can get at home, but again, we decide we can make do. There are rumors of famous big-name music acts...Can't be all bad. Right? WRONG! Keep in mind families with children: You now have no place to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner because the area with all of the restaurants is now off-limits to your children. And guess what? You won't know this until you show up because they kept it a secret! As days go by, we get new information and more details on the festival "rules". Soon, we find out that we will not be allowed in the downtown area and that it will only be accessible to residents of Gunnison County and winner's of the Bud Light Whatever contest. So now, the town is basically inside of a fence and we are stuck outside of the fence with a very limited number of places we can go (fortunately the grocery store happened to be one of them). However, we receive new information yet again that I confirm with the Chamber of Commerce: If we can show proof of our vacation rental agreement, we can get a wrist-band that will allow us inside the fence. All we need to do is go stand in the line down at the Chamber of Commerce and show IDs and the agreement. Everyone in our group needs to be present to get a bracelet. So off we go, in the cold and the rain, to go stand in line to get our bracelets so that we can go into the fenced-off area. Oh, but wait! They ran out of bracelets...no more, so sorry. Tell that to the waitress that I spoke with who worked inside the zone and couldn't get a bracelet so that she could go to work. So, they allotted 4000 bracelets total but didn't make sure that people working downtown got their own bracelets? Awesome planning guys!Ok...so at least our group had a VBRO and was able to make our own meals in the house kitchen. I can't imagine what the families or the eight wedding parties that were in town that weekend did. Ramen noodles? For the Crested Butte town officials who decided that $500K was enough money to basically ruin the vacation of any out of town visitors that had planned a trip to their town for that weekend, let's do some some math that even elected officials might be able to understand: Our group spent $2500 on the house. We spent around $700 on bike rentals and more on lift tickets. Restaurants, bars (the one we could get to), and grocery stores add up to another $1000 (or more). All-in-all, we came close to spending $5K while we were there. Take 100 groups just like ours, and it adds up to $500K...income to the citizens of Crested Butte. That sure would make for some nice repeat business for the town, right? But will we come back when you can't plan anything around any kind of festival or event because the town may be making secret plans that you don't know of? Ask me what I think and I'll tell you: Whatever...One thing I feel MUST be said here since this is such a critical review: The locals that we spoke to were the friendliest most helpful people you may ever come across, and this review is in no way intended to reflect negatively on them. It is more an indictment of their town officials and how they handled (or mishandled) this whole festival business and didn't inform people of what they were doing. I truly hope the town learns something from this experience and doesn't start to become what they would like to think is their antithesis: Aspen or Vail. But then again, maybe they don't care.
Great maps and brochures. Conveniently located on main road in town. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Make a quick stop, you wont be disappointed.
Good source of all tourist information maps and information. Free parking lot where you can easily walk downtown. Public restroom available
Lots of maps and photos of the area. Clean toilet facilities. Located centrally with a nice parking lot which makes for a great place to meet groups preparing to hike.
Come hear for info. Get the phone numbers for merchants who have gone cellular. Other good dope. Call for any kind of help.
The folks from the Chamber of Commerce were so helpful during our recent mountain biking visit. They helped us find the best shops to purchase gear and load up on goodies. They're dining recommendations were spot on, and they even helped us find a nice room (with a hot tub!) when we returned from our adventure! To top it all off...one of the folks even offered to take us to the trail head--a 14 mile drive. I can't tell you how grateful we were.
Stopped in to get maps and recommendations of good place to eat. They were most helpful and loved the map!
We were given maps with hiking trails and all questions were answered in a warm, welcome and friendly manner. VERY impressed with the knowledge we received.....
The lady was nice enough, but just kept giving us maps and saying you can find good places to go all around. We would have liked more specific recommendations geared toward what we wanted to do instead of "they're all good"
my husband is a big hunter and loved seeing the Elk displayed at the chamber and enjoyed hearig the story
WE stopped here for information. They were very helpful. We couldn't remember the name of the B&B near Grand Mesa so they looked up all the listings in the area and gave us the correct name and location.
Ótimo comércio, bem tranquilo com as coisas típicas da região, camisa, cartão postal e preço de turista. Vale a pena comprar uma lembrança.
