This museum is far better than we expected it to be. There is a well presentedcollection of sculptures, and the paintings of the West are extensive and include some notable artists. The gift shop is very good - lots of Leanin' Tree greeting cardsavailable. Combine this visit with the Celestial Tea factory tour almost adjacent.A nice prairie dog farm is also nearby.
I was dragged here, kicking and screaming the whole way, in my head at least. It's not that I'm not a big fan of western "art." Rather, I loathe it and don't consider it to be art. I endured it in silence. Next time I'm staying home.
The next time I'm anywhere near the area this is a 'not to be missed' visit. The amount of items on display is amazing in a lovely setting - FREE. Even if you think Western art is a miss, don't be fooled. The level of artistry is amazing, inside and out.
The Leanin’ Tree Museum of Western Art is a great accompaniment to the Celestial Seasonings Tea tour is you’re in Boulder for the day. The Museum has both an outdoor sculpture garden and indoor gallery of Western paintings, plus an extensive gift shop of Colorado products and on weekdays, there is a tour! You want to know the best part? All of these art galleries are completely free—in fact, if you take the tour, they give you a free greeting card of your choice from the gift shop. I’ve been to the Western Art museum with a group of Middle School students and they thoroughly enjoyed seeing the various oil paintings. Some of the material seems intense to me, as an animal lover, but scenes of cowboys wrangling distressed horses are part of the cataloging of the American West. There are a few rooms of large paintings with a little information about the artist and medium. It would be a good place for students to have a scavenger hunt for certain artists or themes. It only takes about 45 minutes to see both the gallery and the sculptures. Outdoors, however, they have an excellent selection of bronze statues, carefully marked with signs indicating whether you can touch, ride, climb, or avoid the statues. There is a modern-day totem pole too, which is kind of cool. There’s also a horse made of varying farm and factory metal implements that is a crowd-pleaser. Students and guests enjoy the outside statues immensely—climbing a bronze horse saddle or a donkey, or making faces at a cowboy or buffalo? Awesome. On President’s Day Weekend, I took the kids I nanny (ages 10 and 14) to the Tour. It was close to a plant shut-down due to the long weekend/holiday, so all the parts of the factory weren’t running at full-force. You view the parts of the factory—the printing (and see how only 4, yes 4! Colors print each card), the cutting, folding, embossing, and sorting of the cards happen. You get to watch a short video about the history of the operation from the 1960’s in Northern Colorado to its current set-up—even how they preserved a pioneer’s wagon outside. The tour takes about 45 minutes. It was somewhat hands-on as you got a chance to see and touch cards in various states of the process and got to try your hand at folding an envelope—the machine can do half a million much faster than I can!It was a nice chance to learn a little history about how a company keeps over 200 people employed in Colorado—I enjoy sending the cards because they are local, recycled, and are generally beautiful! I like to share Colorado artistry with people all around the country. The selection to purchase from in the gift shop is excellent—far more than you see in National Grocers stores or boutiques. Plus, you get a discount in the gift shop too! How can you go wrong? Send a little love from Leanin’ Tree—ASAP! You won’t regret it.
So much more incredible than I was expecting. We did a day trip to celestial seasonings and came here after lunch. There are some wall sized landscapes that will literally take your breath away, they truly capture that up on a rocky mountain, oh my god how beautiful, feelings you get from say driving through rocky mountain national park! Quirky cowboy art and some very cool sculptures.
Leanin' tree is far more than the extremely creative and cool greeting cards that you have seen for many years. Gunbarrel is the home of the Leanin' Tree Art Gallery and it has fascinating Western Art. It is definitel worthy of your attention.
Whether you go on the tour or not, take some time to stroll through the outdoor bronzes and pieces of art inside on two floors. It is free and the gift shop has a card for any occasion and person. You could spend hours trying to find the perfect card. You'll want to take the tour. It is informative, a bit noisy(you are on the manufacturing floor), and you get to take a card of your choice with you at the end. The average tenure of employees is greater than 10 years. This attests to the type of business this is. Everyone loves greeting cards and the employees feel appreciated. The location is easy to find. It competes with the big league greeting card companies like Hallmark and yet all of the work is done out of this factory. I highly recommend a visit here to view Western Art and appreciate all that goes into making and distributing greeting cards plus I bet you can't leave without finding that perfect card for someone.
Ok, I used to own a Southwest Art gallery. I was looking forward to viewing the art. It was the largest known exhibit of second rate western art I have encountered. Check out the western art at the Denver Art Museum or American Museum of Western Art across from the Brown Palace (reservation required).
This small, out-of-the-way museum is one of the area's best-kept secrets. There is a small, but impressive outdoor exhibit area with wonderful examples of western sculpture. Inside is an even wider variety of sculptures and paintings. The best new: it's FREE, although you will want to make a donation because you had so much FUN!
We were looking for somewhere warm to have fun when we stumbled upon this gem. We enjoyed the beautiful art and the kids enjoyed getting pics made with the structures outside
What a neat little museum. It was a bit cold when we visited, but still was a treat. Ironsides is amazing! Very clever, it was my favorite sculpture. There were a couple pieces that we were allowed to climb and touch. There is a museum inside as well.
Lots of western themed bronzes and a bunch of paintings as well. It will take an hour or two to look at it all. Celestial Seasonings and a chocolate factory are in the same area.
Don't leave Boulder without visiting this amazing collection of western art, absolutely beautiful pieces and so nicely displayed. They also offer a "unique" selection of cards at there boutique.
Nice little tour to see how the Leanin' Tree greeting cards are made. There's a sculpture garden outside and a very nice art museum (2 floors) inside of mostly western and indian art. Check out the paintings by Bill Hughes...they are amazing! This was all free and there's a nice gift shop at the end. You get a free card for doing the tour. Took about an hour to hour and a half. Tours start on the hour. Just outside Boulder and very close to the Celestial Seasonings Tour. We did both in one day when the weather was too crummy to do stuff outside. It was perfect!
The art here is a mix of traditional and contemporary western, and is of a very high quality. Sculpture garden outdoors is a pleasant surprise. Take the tour, if you already know about the printing process, then it will be nothing new. Nice small printing operation...large card selection. End of the tour you get a free card!
