Went in after reading reviews here on trip advisor. Wonderful place! As soon as we went in we were greeted and given caramel samples. Then we were given other samples they had. It was great because there was no pressure to buy anything, just a warm friendly atmosphere.
A unique little shop with a vast selection of food specialties. You'll be taken aback when they not only encourage, but nearly require you to sample the variety of jams, sauces, soups, candies, cheeses, and other delights! They also have specialty kitchen items and the staff bend over backward to explain and demonstrate the usefulness of the items. There's no pressure sales, just a warm friendly staff that make you feel at home. You'll enjoy the tasting and the teasing, plus I doubt you'll leave without at least a jar of delicious jam. It's worth a stop and when you leave you'll feel like you've met a friend. Enjoy this place that I give an A++ rating.
We stopped to check this shop out. The ladies working there are fantastic. They encouraged us to sample many of the items for sale. We were able to buy gifts to be shipped to our homes.
We have been coming to Pagosa for several years now and one of our favorite stops has always been The Choke Cherry Tree. You are usually immediately greeted with a smile and an offer of a nutty caramel or caramel without nuts, both made on the premises. Next comes the offer of a piece of toffee almond, which is to die for. Then there is the tasting center. There is an area set up where you can taste all their various sauces, jellies, etc. Throughout the process, there are usually clerks asking if you need help. This summer has not been the same. There are new owners and maybe they are still working through the kinks, but the level of enthusiasm seems to be much lower. Now, the fabulous gal who runs the tasting center was off today, but they usually have someone else doing it. I had to go to the back of the store and ask if someone could check me out today after waiting at the register for several minutes. They have fabulous products and their caramels are delicious so I hope that the level of enthusiasm returns and it is fun to go to again.
This is just a great place to experience! The owner checked our purchases, and she was a delight, very helpful!
Fun place to stop and browse different types of jelly, dips, ect. There is a section for kitchen accessories and another section to sample some items available for purchase.
The people here were so delightful and the store very unique. Lots of fun foods and candy. They have great caramels and chocolates with names like Moose poop and bear piles. It's well worth the stop.
The caramels are melt in your mouth delicious, exactly the same as my mother's recipe. After participating in the informative tasting, I bought several jams/jellies, and was tempted by the many uses of the soups. The first day we stopped was Labor Day, and it was busy with people buying things as they headed home. We returned a few days later and it was less crowded which made for a more leisurely time selecting goodies.
If you are in Pagosa Springs, this is a must stop! We have been numerous times, and are always impressed with the customer service and the quality of items provided. Known for their caramels, "poops" (chocolates), and food products.. we have not had anything here that was bad! Be sure to participate in a "tasting". Employees will give you samples of various jams, jellies, vinaigrettes, and other items that will leave you saying MMM! The problem is.. what do we purchase to take home with us with everything tasting so good. We ALWAYS purchase a bag of caramels with nuts.. and normally purchase some jelly to share with family and friends.. The good thing is that they have a website and ship to your home if you just have to have that choke cherry syrup or jelly fix..
This is a must stop in Pagosa Springs. Walk in to the store and they greet you with a caramel and samples of their home made jellies, jams, dressings and marinades.(and whatever else you want to sample) Their caramels are the best I have ever had and their poops are famous. Their Choke Cherry items, caramels and poops are their specialties. The items are a bit pricey but definitely worth it!
We recently stayed at Pagosa Springs for a wedding and part of the wedding pack recommended a visit to the Choke Cherry Tree. What a great little place! The staff were warm and welcoming - they took us through free taste testing of a variety of their products (sauces, cream cheese mixes, jams, and their famous caramels!) and we even added a pin to their visitor world map! The products were delicious - they have a huge range of gourmet savoury and sweet foods/mixes/condiments etc. We came away with delicious apple and pear butter, red wine chocolate sauce, baby buffalo chocolate & caramel chips and key lime pie and smores mix (you mix it in with cream cheese to make a dessert dip!) - divine! Well worth a stop over and a free taste test!!!
