This is only a 2.2 trail with little to no incline. Just a perfect and quiet trail to experience the beauty of the park in a very intimate way.
This is a nice easy trail located just of the campground in Mesa Verde. It is about 1 mile each way and the trail is flat. There are beautiful views at the end. My 9 year old son and I hiked out and back in about an hour with a few stops for pictures. There was only 1 other person on this trail. We felt like we owned the mountain.
This nature trail takes you out for some nice views of Cortez down in the valley below. You'll see the old road bed alignment and marvel that this is how early visitors to the park came in--there's a reason they called it the Knife Edge Road (search for pictures on the internet or www.nps.gov/meve). Guide booklets available to help you identify plants along the way. Especially nice in the early morning or evening.
We did a bird walk with a ranger. She was a bit scattered, but quite knowledgeable. There were cougar tracks on the trail which had been circled, making them easy to locate and study. We also saw a bald eagle, which made my husband's day. This trail is flat and easy.
It is hard to imagine that this used to be the road into the parkVery disappointed in the grafitti on the rocks at the end. When will people realize that we are not impressed by their ignorance. It is also a felony to deface federal land. Too bad they can't be caught.
this hike is very easy. You do not see any cliff dwellings in this area--it starts in the camping area.
Knife Edge Trail is a perfect place to watch sunsets. Off in the distance as it grows darker you can view beautiful Sleeping Ute Mountain while the town of Cortez slowly comes to life below. It will take about 30 minutes max to reach the end of the trail. Be sure to bring your flashlights (I have forgotten mine before). There are giant rocks at the end of the trail that are great for sitting!
