I ride here every summer, it is a great bike trail. Using this trail and others you can go all the way from Breckenridge to Vail. Going either direction the ride between Breck and Copper is pretty easy. Going from Copper to the top of Vail pass is a big climb but on the very easy side of mountain passes. Going from the town of Vail to the top of Vail pass is a completely different story, it is a long ways with a lot of elevation gain a few sections that are extremely steep (many people walk their bikes). But if you are up for the challenge it is a very enjoyable ride. The paths can get a bit crowded on nice weekends or very crowded if there is an organized ride using the trail.
This paved, all purpose trail runs along I-70 from Frisco to Copper Mountain. One can continue on through Copper and go steadily uphill to Vail Pass and beyond! My husband and I have biked here numerous times and it is absolutely great! Not having to worry about traffic is nice, and rough parts of the trail surface have recently been repaved. The trail climbs steadily once you leave Frisco and there are some short, steep parts. I would rate the difficulty as moderate to more difficult. Remember, if you don't live at altitude, you'll need to contend with trying to catch your breath. You'll pass some beaver ponds and parallel a sparkling stream that actually has some trout. The canyon doesn't get any sun until late morning so be prepared for cold if you're out early. Cross the highway and ride through the Copper Mountain Resort - pretty views. At the end of the resort, you'll see a large sign with information concerning the ride up to Vail Pass. Many folks cheat and take a shuttle up and ride down. This is not a review of the Vail Pass portion, but the trail is excellent and yes it's steep, but doable. So, if you're in the area and looking for a scenic ride, try this one.
