Contains lots of local history information about Steamboat the community, the Howelsen ski area, the resort and we really like the Christmas tree contest before the Holidays.
You can see everything and read all the placards in a short span. My kind of museum. ;-) The old furniture and tools are really interesting--like an old bear trap, and a couple of neat antique pianos--and so is the ski stuff they have. Our favorite was the old chair lift. It's an appealing mix of Colorado rancher/military/pioneer/ski history.
This is such a great regional museum, felt we really knew much more about the history and people fo this town. Friendly and informative person at the desk. Loved it!
Took a day off from skiing and visited this small museum. Kids and adults both enjoyed it: interesting and educational.
Well worth a trip and the staff were very friendly. An interesting selection of artifacts and displays. Nice things that are hands on and videos.
Outstanding collection and set up as a Western museum! This restored Victorian house with other house attached had lots of rooms with artifacts, furniture, photos, letters, and accounts of people who were instrumental in founding and making Steamboat Springs, in addition to the story that fits with so many Native Utes, Pioneers, Homesteaders, Early Settlers, to Ranchers, Cowboys, Outlaws and Lawpeople, and WWII era skiier veterans. There were labels placing everything in its proper time period and acknowledging who donated the items to the museum. The curator/docent was friendly and helpful, offering basic directions around the museum and giving a brochure. She answered any questions we had about any of the people or things. There's also a children's section with dress-up items, games, and items to touch. My boyfriend liked the collection of guns and kitchen items-- I enjoyed seeing the personal items and history with particular brave women and families who changed their lives to help make this city. A wonderful blend of 3-d items from hundreds of years ago to the nearer-past-- the 50s-60's even. If you liked Westerns or a show like Dr. Quinn, books/show like LIttle House on the Prairie, or American Girls -- Kaya, Josephina, or Kirsten, you'd like this place. The cost was nominal ($5 for adults) and the prices in the gift shop were more than reasonable. I got several gifts-- books, kids books, post cards, jewelry, ornaments.
That tracks the history of the Steamboat Springs area. One of the highlight is their extensive collection of old photographs that document the history. As it happened, we visited during their Festival of Trees but regrettably I failed to take photos of them all. One could still view many of the worthwhile permanent displays even with the trees.
This is such a quaint and wonderful museum. There is information on Steamboat as a town and also on skiing. There is a small entrance fee but worth it for sure. The employees who run the front desk are always excited to see new faces come through the door. If you're downtown you should for sure go check this little museum out!
It cost $6 per person to enter the museum but I felt like it was worth the money to learn about the history of Steamboat and how it turned into a ski town from a cow town. It is very small but it is jam packed with all kinds of tidbits that will keep you interested for a couple of hours.
A fun way to learn more about the town and the area. They have a treasure hunt game to keep kids engaged and entertained. Would recommend it on a rainy day when you can't enjoy the outdoors.
Especially loved the artifacts throughout the home; in the kitchen, bedrooms, etc. Lots of antiques! Also, great history of the town and area.
This was a nice stop on our way through northwestern Colorado! The museum contains many artifacts from Steamboat's early days. There is a nice history of winter sports in the area. Part of the museum is a Victorian era house that provides a glimpse of the life of one of Steamboat's wealthier families. The museum is staffed by locals who are excited to share the history of their community.
The Museum offers free tours on Tues, Wed and Thurs. Today we did the Olympic Historical Walking Tour (Tuesday). Our local guide, Marianne, did a great job of sharing many interesting facts regarding the connection between Steamboat Springs and the Olympics, as well as many other subjects. We even got to talk with Adam Loomis while the US National Nordic Combined team was practicing jumps. Included with the tour is a free $1 off coupon to the museum and a free ticket for the ski lift and alpine slide on Howelsen Hill (a $12 value). We are going to the Mineral Springs Walking Tour tomorrow (Wed) and the Downtown Historical Walking Tour on Thursday. Each person on the Wed and Thurs tours gets a coupon for $1 off of the museum as well.
Half of the museum is the history of skiing in the area and pioneers of the area. That is interesting and they have lots of artifacts. The other half is a replica of a victorian house from the turn of the century. It is really cool to see how a victorian house would have looked. It was a little creepy in the house part because we were the only ones in there. Later we did find out there is supposedly a ghost that haunts it. We didn't see anything but there was a general creepiness in the house section. The volunteer at the front desk was very nice and seemed very passionate about the museum. It's a great stop on a rainy/snowy day especially if you love history.
This museum is a must-do attraction when in Steamboat Springs. It's a nice reminder that there's more to the area than the people who come to town for a few days to ski. The exhibits are really informative and easy to digest, and you can do the museum in a pretty short amount of time. The volunteers who were working were so nice, and you could tell that they really care about the community and the mission of the museum. Make sure you go to the Tread of Pioneers Museum, and give them an extra donation on top of the entrance fee - it's worth it to support organizations like this!
