This is a wonderful loop that gets one right up & out of town pretty quickly...it can be fairly strenuous if done quickly. The two trailheads might be more accurately called west (off N. Aspen St.) and east (off Tomboy Rd) than north & south. The trail is named for Jud Wiebe, a past local USFS recreation specialist.
we love hiking this trail. It is beautiful , especially in the fall! It is a hop ,skip and a jump away from the gondola and is not to be missed!
this is great about 45min up and 20 down...great to do every morning if you like to move early...even in the snow it is very easy to walk..the worst part is taking the steep side up but your butt will look sooooo good
Been hiking the Jeb to and from both ends for 25+ years. Wonderful views, lovely pine forest and other trail options.
Fantastic hike, not too long, not too short. Beautiful views, great Aspens. Don't miss Comet Falls - it's not marked and worth the extra 10 minutes to get there. From the west trailhead, follow the trail to the north of the bridge. Visited after a big rain and the falls were fabulous.
Great views of Telluride - and surrounding area. The north trail is for hikers who love to climb and the Aspen grove halfway up the climb was one of the highlights for me. You have Great views when the trail levels off and there is a nice seating area to take in all the clouds rolling in the early afternoon during the summer. The climb down was easy. Parking is on the road but there was amble spaces when I came after lunch. This hike is very popular with the locals and can be crowded. I took my time and complete the hike in a little less than two hours. I love that it's free too.
Used to be a daily staple of mine when I lived in town, since the trailheads are in town and it's a relatively short loop (1:15 at a brisk pace). It's definitely a notch or two greater than Bear Creek in terms of strenousness, but by the same token is not exceedingly difficult. There is no need for technical skills and pitches aren't exceedingly steep, it's just that it's fairly well sustained.Everyone has their preference, but I've always liked to go clockwise by starting out on Aspen Street and finising up coming down Tomboy (Oak Street). The reason I like going clockwise is that you basically get all of your uphill out of the way at once in a much more sustained manner vs. counter-clockwise which has a bit of a downhill from the top of the switch backs until the bridge over Coronet Creek, then you have to gradually climb uphill again. Not a big deal either way. There are great views of town and the valley at the top of the trail in the grassy brush. The Jud Weibe also serves as a gateway to Sneffles Highline, Waterline, Marshal Basin, Owl Creek.
I started at the north trail head. I'm glad I had a trekking pole with me because the first approx. 1.5 miles is ascending the trail. There were some trail runners but all of them had started at the south trail head. I think the ascent is more gradual from the south side.
Steep uphill going clockwise, no waterfall, but nice view of Telluride canyon from north side. Has an element of danger as trail comes quite close to a bluff drop-off. Otherwise very enjoyable.
A nice 3.5 mile loop above the city of Telluride. There is some steep elevation gain going up and steep drops coming down. It ends on Tom Boy Road which can be busy with dirt bikes and jeeps coming down from the pass.
Loved this trail. It had lots of variety. The initial uphill section is a bit strenuous for those who don't hike a lot or those not used to high altitude. The view at the top is amazing. The walk down is just as lovely.
We enjoyed this trail. It left from town, so it was easy to access. With switchbacks up the side of a mountain, hikers (and the occasional biker) are able to see the town from gradually increasing heights. This is a pleasant hike and not too strenuous. Well worth the effort.
Enjoyed this trail, because of the beautiful views. Being from flat Kansas this trail and a little strenuous for us. The only thing I didn't like about this trail was the the we did the trail there were SO many flies landing on us--that drove me nuts. The bug spray didn't seem to help too much.
My wife and I climbed Jed Wiebe and were not disappointed - we're not experienced hikers! The first half of the hike has some challenging inclines via a number of switchbacks. The trail for the most part is plenty wide though does narrow in some areas. There are many very scenic views en route to the top though the view at the top of the valley and mountains to the south of town are amazing. Coming down along Cornet creek is very pretty too.
Three years in Telluride were beautiful . . . but also very hard. We moved there for work (not for play like so many) and I was working a lot. The trailhead for Jud Wiebe was about a four minute walk from our front door so it made it possible for us to get off of work after a long day and still get out and enjoy a quick, strenuous, beautiful hike many summer afternoons. I'm not one to take the same trail twice . . . and I'm especially not one to take 'out and back' type of runs or hikes. The Jud Wiebe trail has so much diversity and so many great views from different angles and, best of all, makes a great loop. So it never grew old for me and became a great escape for many late afternoons.
