This hike is at a our 9500', so get ready! We last did in the winter, just after a recent snow. We used traction devices on our boots, which worked out fine, but wish we had used snowshoes instead so we could have ventured off trail a bit. Highly recommend in any season.
The Bear Lake trailhead is a great starting point for hiking. You can make it a short hike and just go around Bear Lake or go further on to Nymph, Dream, and Emerald Lake for a longer hike. The day we hiked we got there early since we heard the parking lot fills up and we were glad we did! We hiked around Bear Lake, and then on to Nymph, Dream, and Emerald Lakes....all of which were wonderful! Then we backtracked and linked up with the trail to Lake Haiyaha and then continued on the loop to Alberta Falls, before ending at the Glacier Gorge trailhead. We were pretty tired by this point, so we took the free shuttle bus back to our car at the Bear Lake trailhead. It was a wonderful time of hiking at enjoying the beauty of the mountains. Make sure to bring along water and snacks if you will be hiking for a while.
A easy and beautiful hike for May! The weather was perfect for tank tops even though there was snow on the ground. I did this hike alone and felt very comfortable..
I've been here to both visit the very accessible lake walk and as a trailhead. It's always a little congested, and the bathrooms this time of year weren't incredibly clean. Other than that, it's breathtakingly beautiful, and many families and people who don't want to hike enjoy spending time here. Definitely the place to get great views and photo ops without summiting or breaking a sweat.
We stopped at several ponds/lakes in the area and we really enjoyed Bear Lake Trail. We walked the entire loop around the lake. It didn't take that long and it was a fairly easy walk. We went early in the morning in hopes of seeing more wildlife, but sadly other than birds and squirrels we didn't see much, but was still worth it.
We really wanted to take Trail Ridge Road, but it was closed for the winter season. We certainly were not disappointed by Bear Lake Trailhead. There were stunning views every inch of the drive. There were fairly easy trails throughout the drive. Overall, we had a great time and really enjoyed all the beauty of the Rockies.
My brother, 1 1/2 year old niece, and I meant to hike towards Alberta Falls but missed the sign for the turn and ended up at Bear Lake instead. The hike was an easy one with some good views. We planned on turning around to head to the falls but it starting to sleet on us so we ran back to the car instead because of my niece. That's what we get for visiting in late October, 75 degrees in the city/45 in the mountains.
Bear lake in RMNP is an easy and gorgeous hike. Just minutes from the visitor center, the mountain views are spectacular. It's and easy walk of 1 mile around the lake, so easy I saw a mother with her baby in it's stroller doing it. The 2 mile up and back to alberta falls is also at the same trailhead and moderately easy also. Well worth the look.
There is a such a variety from this trailhead, and we hiked last Wednesday for 3 hours on a 7 mile loop. We went to Lake Haiyaha, around to Alberta Falls, past the Glacier Gorge trialhead, back to the Bear Lake Trailhead. It was so nice. We didn't think about the last .5 mi between the trail heads being all uphill, or we would have shuttled back! This past Saturday we wanted to see how far up to Flattop and Hallett we could get. We didn't even get to the peak of Flattop because the trail became covered with snow, and more snow was coming in. If we had been better prepared we would have kept on, as other hikers did, we just had to turn around. It was still work it and completely gorgeous! The view points for Dream Lake and Emerald Lake on the trail to Flattop are amazing and worthy destinations themselves.Dress in layers!!
We started at Bear Lake trailhead, hiked past Dream Lake, Lake Haiyaha, The Loch to Timberline Falls, then back out via Alberta Falls to Glacier Gorge trailhead. We took the shuttle back to Bear Lake trailhead. I really don’t think you could go wrong hiking any trail in this area. See the ranger station at Bear Lake for a trail map. The trails are well marked, but it’s always best to hike with a map. We figure our route was a bit over 11 miles and we hiked about 5 hours with A LOT of pictures. It’s hard to get a read on the weather here, I’d advise layer on the clothes and pack a rain coat. We removed a layer and added the rain coat as it rained on and off the first half of the day. Aside from the first mile from the trailheads there were just a few people on the trails. It was a great day of hiking.
Bear Lake Trailhead to Fern Lake Trail Head. 10.1 miles about 4.5 hours. Had snow and sleet with high winds. Still gorgeous. Come prepared for changing weather conditions.
Rocky Mountain National Park was beautiful. September was a great time of year to go because we saw snow & fog in the morning and then the sun came out later. Saw some elk right off the road. We started at the Bear Lake Trailhead and did a short hike to Alberta Falls. The trail was really nice and brought us to an awesome waterfall with a lot of cool chipmunks along the way! Saw some deer as well. We also walked up to Bear Lake and there was a thick layer of fog overhead and some vapor coming off of the water. It looked really neat. Would love to hike some other trails around RMNP if I'm ever back in the area.
A beautiful drive on Bear Lake Road leading to your destination. Bear Lake is just a few yards from the parking lot and the walk around it is just awesome. So quiet and well worth the see. We came early as to be able to get a parking spot around 8:00 am.
Other than the Bear Lake, the trail that goes to Nymph, Dream, & Emerald Lakes is a little more difficult. Would NOT recommend taking a stroller on this trail. Sadly saw some other guy that was pushing one uphill and I was even more sad to hear that he was from Kansas as well. On this trail, we saw fish in Dream Lake, chipmunks by Emerald Lake (that under no circumstance are you suppose to feed), and on the way back, we saw a brown bear...at this point, I was reminded of Kansas tornadoes. When a tornado is spotted in Kansas, everyone runs to see the tornado. When a brown bear in Colorado is seen, everyone ran towards the brown bear...I would not recommend these actions unless someone can mention that it is a very safe distance away. Along with the wildlife, the scenery was breath taking. On the trail to the waterfall, we saw more chipmunks before we were rained out.
