Shaped like a heart, the island reminds you of the tragedy of George Boltd. Each and every corner of the beautifully landscaped island and the grand castle he has built on it has its tragic story to tell. He built this for his beautiful wife but she could never see it as she passed away before her time.

Lovely island on the busy channel along St. Lawrence river. Don't forget to bring your camera and take pictures when the ferry closes in and goes around towards the dock. The Power house is especially stunning on its own or against the island's backdrop. Also check the water under the bridge of the powerhouse. We saw snakes swimming towards the island and large fishes. A lot of tour boats from Canada crisscross here. Their tour guides lecture is very audible since sound travels faster on water than on air.

If you go to the 1000 island this is the one place you must see. This is truly the one thing that you will always remember from a trip to the 1000 islands. One the most beautiful old castles in the area. The story behind it is bitter sweet. I'm happy they are restoring after many years of sitting and not being loved. Definately worth the trip to see it and explore

We loved it. Magnificent grounds, beautiful castle. It is a must see in the 1000 Islands area. We took a five hour tour and loved it.

A wonderful place of history tucked in upper NY!! Easy drive up, the shops in Alexandria bay are full of neat items to purchase!! Wonderful experience !!

Wow loved beautiful castle and wonderful story behind it..... Worth the walk around :) but castle is still under construction

Come with cash, they don't let you bring your own food/drink from the tour boats, and have your passport ready. That being said, when you explore the castle don't forget to take in the outbuildings around the island, and the views from the different sides.

Heart Island is a love story that was nearly forgotten. The property was purchased by a Russian immigrant who can to the US in his early teens. Uneducated and poor, he worked and gained the respect of an influential man. First trying his hand at chicken farming in Texas, he came back to NY and made his fortune in the hotel and property business. He fell in love with his boss's daughter. With the the help of J. Astor he purchased hotels and property. Becoming a very rich man in money and in love. Bolt purchased Hart Island and renamed it Heart Island, building a beautiful castle for his wife. The rest of the story is for you to discover among the buildings and grounds of Heart Island.The property is expansive and undergoing restoration. History is everywhere. The opportunity to walk and picnic is everywhere. While undergoing remodeling of the main entrance, it was difficult for disabled individuals to enter and navigate some area. I didn't see taped self-guided tours for the mainly reading and photographs in all the area.It is difficult for the group restoring the Heart Island property since it is a part of NY state and nonprofit organization. The ticket was $8 with discounts only for active military. Often difficult for families to have properties with places for kids to run and play, Heart Island is sadly unable to provide changing stations or ample bathrooms on the grounds. The property is renovating the "Playhouse" for future story telling for kids. Come back to this place in a year or two and the family friendly welcome mat will be out. The restoration is a massive undertaking and it will take time. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The story told is worth the trip!

Such a beautiful but tragic love story. Knowing about the tragic story behind the purchase of the island and castle. Very bittersweet.
