This is the Hall of Fame of Great Americans on CUNY's Bronx Community College Campus. This was the first Hall of Fame In the USA. This was originally built when it was NYU's uptown campus, but NYU sold the campus to NYC in the early 1970's. It is beautiful, historic, a national landmark. It would be great if one day, the Hall of Fame were expanded. Well worth the trip.
This is a great place to take the family. Its very beautiful and educational. Its a wonderful area for picture taking as well. My family had a great time finding their favorite famous people.
The original Hall of Fame of great Americans, overlooks the Harlem river from a hilltop on what was originally the Bronx campus of NYU. It's now Bronx Community College, of the City University system. The city has left the campus pretty much as it was, a beautiful collection of buildings, designed by Stanford White. The hall, behind the domed Library building, is a covered column lined brick walk, lined with bronze busts, on pedestals. There are authors, artists, and statesmen. More information is at their website: http://www.bcc.cuny.edu/halloffame/This is probably not part of anyone's tour of New York City and it's quite a walk up from the 4 train, on Jerome Avenue. But, if you're doing advanced Bronx touring, this is great spot to see some history. And before there was a baseball hall of fame, or rock and roll hall of fame, or a golfer's hall of fame, this was the original "Hall of Fame"! Take the 4 train, uptown, to Burnside Avenue, walk west, up the hill to University Avenue.
It is a beautiful line up of busts of historic figures from America's past. Interesting historic notes, and no admission price.
This is a return visit after the new library building completed. This is a beautiful and interesting place to spend some time. It is something to experience as part of a visit to New York. As all universities grow it seems they crowd out more space when money becomes available to build. It is good that they managed to keep this peace of the old place. You do have to pass through a guarded gate now. I was with a tour group.
I remember finding myself as a boy on my first walk at a college campus. The former NYU Bronx satellite of New York University made for some memorable vistas. The famed Irish green Connemara marble entrance invited so many for so long to the impressive library, although at the time I knew nothing of its long standing recognition, except for how penetratingly visual it all seemed. Nor was I yet aware of the genius of its prestigious architect -Stanford White - some of whose biography and escapades with Evelyn Nesbit, the vivacious vixen of her day memorialized in the red velvet swing, became fodder for much of E.L. Doctorow's near classic and delightful memoir and engrossing film of the same name: Ragtime.Further along in the walk, there is the panoramic vista and curved memorial promenade highlighted by multiple busts of historic local figures forming what is referred to as the Walk of Fame. All in all, it's one of those places not necessarily compelling enough to most for a separate planned trip, but if one, in or near the area, makes the effort to hop off the Woodlawn 4 train or Major Deegan Parkway ( NYC extension of NY State thruway), it's an easy enough engagement, For others I know who've done it, it's normally also cited as well worth the effort.
Settled in the back of Bronx Community College, this small monument to famous Bronxites sits on top of a large hill. While the highway is just below, all the trees and flora drown out the noise and on a spring or summer day, all you hear are the birds chirping as you walk along the antique walkway. Near each column is a statue or bust of a famous contributor to society who either was born or raised in the Bronx, and it is very tranquil yet entertaining. Never knew it was there until I took a class at BCC!
