Good beer with a fun theme. Nice folks, too. Special events occasionally, and they get busy. No reason not to check it out.
My title references the founder's autobiography, Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah, which I bought in the taproom as we were enjoying some of the rich flavors of the brews here. So much lore of Judaica is packed into every pint. I thought the Imperial Amber Pomegranate was a wonderful taste on its own, but then to read Cowan's narration of the first pom crush and then why--that pomegranates are one of the Seven Sacred Species found by the scouts Moses sent out to find the Promised Land--You Can't Make Up Stuff Like This (but you can brew it!)
You can tell right off that bat these people LOVE their craft. The tasting room is more like a big living room, with plenty of tables, and some comfy couches. It's a family friendly environment and a great place to spend a weekend afternoon. We arrived and purchased a tasting flight (5 or 6? I can't remember!) where you are given wood coins to trade in for each beer sample, which is served in a 4-5 ounce glass. You can easily spend the first hour+ just chilling and enjoying the flight. Definitely take the tour!! It's free, and super fun. The guide brings along a 12 pack of beer and offers the group as many tastings as you want, until the 12 pack runs out. You'll feel like a friend invited over the house, not a student in a classroom. Awesome place all around.
The beer is terrific. They brew with imagination and passion. Some of their more aggressive recipes will challenge you but across the board they have a great handle on balancing fruitiness, hopiness and Judaism. (ha).
Great brewery! I came here a few months ago with a bunch of friends and we had a great time. The tastings are reasonably priced and the tour is quite fun (this from a guy who's been to a bunch!). The real gem here is great beer and a super relaxed environment. The tasting room has a bunch of tables and couches and you can just hang around for a while drinking beer and playing games. They also allow you to bring in outside food (they don't serve any), which is really neat. All in all, a great place with a great sense of humor and it's one place I'd definitely come back to again!
Plain outside, comfortable and welcoming inside. Board games and ways to spend time available, friendly staff, tasty beers.
Just off of 1-87 North, is the Smaltz Brewing Company, the manufacture of He' Brew, "the chosen beer." With this as advertising, how could you not want to visit and see what these people are up to. When you arrive, you will be welcomed into a large tasting room, which is equipped with sofas, chairs, and re-purposed doors serving as tables...tv are turned to the latest sports on tap as well. You can purchase a small glass for 10 dollars, which gives you access to five of the beers that they have on tap at the time. Your tap-master will give you an in-depth education as to the making of the particular beer that you are enjoying, calling your attention to the various aromas that you can detect within your brew. The variety of the beers on tap is wonderful, from a light pilsner to a very dark and hefty ale, each with its own favor and taste, and each one equally delightful. This is not a place to come and swill them down...if you like good beer, not the watered down junk that American's traditionally purchase, then this place should be on your list of must see places. They give a wonderful tour of the brewing process itself, and the history of the company is told in a wonderfully humorous way, but with pride in what they do and how they do it. If you want to learn how beer is made, then this tour is recommended...if you want to see people proud of the work they do and the product that they make, then this place is going to be a refreshing stop in many ways.Yet, it is the shtick that surrounds the beers themselves, names like Jewbelation, Rejewvenator, Hop Manna IPA, and Messiah will tickle your funny bone, but do not let the humor fool you, these people are serious about their beers and one taste will tell you...you have been led to the promised land...at least for good beer!
I've recently discovered one of my new favorite places to go in Saratoga County-Shmaltz Brewery. It's right off of Exit 10 on I-87(Northway). They have a large tasting room where you can hang out and sample a handful of their fantastic beers. The employees are knowledgeable and friendly, and the schtick surrounding all of the He'Brew beers is funny as hell. Take the tour, and ask them about the company's history. They don't serve food, but they encourage you to bring food in with you (I've done this twice on my way home after a long day of work). They also have food trucks there certain days. They do various events as well-trivia on Thursdays, etc.Add it to your "places to visit" list whether you're local or visiting the Capital District/Saratoga.
I enjoy visiting this brewery every time I'm in business trip in the area as my company's office is at walking distance. Actually they are a tasting room where - for 10 bucks - you buy a small ( collectible ) glass you can use to sample five beers. The quality and the variety of their beers is absolutely amazing, it's great fun to discover new brews every time. The only negative points I can think about : - they serve no food ( but they allow to bring your own food inside )- the place is a bit in the middle of nowhere ... you need a car to go back in town, you cannot enjoy too many beers without risking a DUI charge...
Spent a couple of hours beer tasting with my son, daughter, and son in law at Smaltz Brewing. It's neat that we have a brewery right here in Clifton Park. This is a tasting room and sometimes they have food trucks come in. Check out their website or Facebook page for the hours of operation. Overall it's a fun place to visit if you like craft brewed beers.
I've visited twice. Once with work women from work. & once with friends. Great time. The beer was excellent & the place is funky. Feels like a neighborhood place. The employees love their product & share their love with customers. Will definitely return.
I was here the day the had their grand opening. It was a tremendously hot and humid day in July. My thoughts were, what a better place to be than in a nice, cool brewery.... Wrong :) Either they always brew at room temperature or they just hadn't cooled off the brewery part yet but it was very hot in there. The entire experience is a fun one - having a brewery so close to where you live is always a plus. They have a nice "bar area" where you can relax on leather furniture and have a tasting of their fine brews. The staff and owner are very friendly and accommodating. I've also seen various food trucks that camp out in their parking lot from time to time to offer a little snack to go with the beer tasting. If you're a beer person, you have to visit here, it's so close why wouldn't you??
Great place, funky vibe, and a really great place to hang out with friends. We took the inlaws there, and had a great time, closed the place. Even the other guests are entertaining, and yes the beer is great. Love the schmaltzy gift shop items too.
We received a beer-of-the-month gift for Christmas that included two beers from the Shmaltz Brewing Company. We were intrigued about their history especially since the beer is named He'brew Beer and the names of the beers are very creative and very much tongue in cheek. After a quick search on the Internet we found out they had just opened their own brewery and tasting room in Clifton Park which is a very short detour for us when we go upstate to visit family. Amazing beers and Scooter, the tasting room manager, was really friendly and knew his beer! We plan to make this a regular stop on our trips upstate for sure. Please check them out!
