The view of the huge, majestic Cohoes Falls alone is well worth the trip to this historic little town just north of Albany and at the junction of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. But don't leave town after satisfying your curiosity of this natural wonder and snapping your photos. There is so much more to Cohoes and, on the other side of the Mohawk, Waterford, such as the Erie Canal, Harmony Mills, the Cohoes Music Hall and Peebles Island State Park. There is also plenty of historic architecture, shopping and dining available for your pleasure in both of these towns. There is more to Cohoes than the Cohoes Falls!
New York's 'other' falls- very majestic in my opinion. The power plant beside the falls does not take away from its beauty. The viewing area is quite close to the falls and offers good views from shore to shore. My only criticism of the viewing spot is that it was untidy with trash.
For being in a small little city you'd be surprised how these falls are when they are running they are just beautiful and the way it had been fix up so you can enjoy viewing them is just great spot and be educated about the area
Nice views, with a long pedestrian bridge and steps that get you fairly close to the falls. Stairs are not for the faint of heart. There are some helpful placards around as well. That said, without packing a picnic, you'd be hard pressed to spend more than a half an hour there. But so what; it's free.
The falls themselves can be very impressive depending on how rapidly they are flowing. I was here in late October 2014 after a couple days of rain and the falls were flowing nicely. The "park" on the other hand really isn't much. In fact there are places were the plants are sufficient large enough to make it difficult to get a good view or take great pictures. The park could be helped by some maintenance. A visit to the falls is about 15 minutes max. Parking is on the School St. just off of Mohawk St. in Cohoes.I recommend stopping by the Cohoes Falls if you are in the area or love waterfalls.
We wanted to see waterfalls on our trip from Saratoga Springs to Poughkeepsie, so stopped here. There is a small park behind a row of run down terrace houses and it is easy to park in the street. The falls themselves are next to some industrial buildings - so you have to focus your camera to get a decent picture. But the Falls themselves are quite impressive, even in September, and some of the views downriver are good. So I would recommend a visit if you're in the area, but don't make a major detour. No facilities.
These falls are quite lovely and you can get some fabulous photos, but the setting is just ugly! They are along a main street, with a fence along it. You can park very close, and walk a short distance to the little "park" area that has been set up. There are several picnic tables and a bit of grass. I imagine the falls are spectacular in the spring! About a third of the falls had water cascading over them, and the remaining third was a very impressive huge rock. As another reviewer said a nice scenic overlook, but definitely not an activity or destination. The little deli and ice cream shop just up the street serves wonderful items.
As beautiful as any small waterfall in neighboring states. And you can drive there, drive an vertical wheelchair to see it, take the bus! This is an equal opportunity view if ever there was such a thing. But this isn't really an activity at all simply a scenic overlook. Up the street is a nice little deli that has good Boars Head meats, nice cheeses, fresh desserts and ice cream. Do your self a favor and have a snack with your date as you stop by. Otherwise you might not want to stay more than a moment.
The waterfall is beautiful, it is definitely worth seeing. There are lots of educational plaques around as well in case you're there on a day where there are no tour guides (like me). There's a place to see it up high, but to get closer you have to walk down several steps and a steep hill. Just a warning since the very old or the very out of shape probably can't do it.
If you are in the area it is definitely worth the trip. Its free, it's right off the main road, and its breathtaking. We parked almost right in front and we were very lucky as we had 3 eagles dining in the water as well as an egret.
Love It.It's the best there is. It is also very open the food is very good I like the stay and the room..
We stopped in Albany for a couple of days from our trip back from Maine. It was by accident I came across these falls. I am glad we went and see them.
While the falls are worth seeing, it is not real tourist friendly. Getting there the signage is poor. The immediate area around the falls is good, but much past that is in need of updating. A lot of barbed wire and overgrown bushes limit the views and the paths to the riverbed were closed. We love to check out waterfalls, so for us it was worth the drive. With some updates this could be a wonderful tourist attraction.
We happened across this park during a road trip to learn about the Erie Canal. We knew that there must be a falls in this area, drove around looking for it, and happened acrossFalls View Park. It turned out to be one of the most informative stops of our canal trip. The park offers great views and historical information of Cohoes Falls, the related hydroelectric plant, and mill history. There is a well-landscaped upper level, stairs down to a level near the water level, and walkways to view the hydro plant from the river side. The steward at the park pointed out an old lock from the original Erie canal hidden across the road from the park. Brookfield overlook, a short walk away, has a different set of views and more information, especially about mills and mill housing. The park facilities were new and in great shape, and the information placards very helpful. We understood from the steward that this park is a public-private partnership and a labor-of-love for a group of volunteers, the local government and the canal trust. They’ve done a first-rate job. The whole park, especially the lock, deserve more attention and funding — the lock may be in danger of receding into its berm and into history. Given the importance Cohoes Falls in scale and to the nation’s history, we’re amazed we hadn’t heard of it before. Granted, we’re from the Deep South and our history training about the vitally important Erie Canal took up about 15 minutes. Luckily we rediscovered it in Simon Winchester’s book “The Men Who United the States” (highly recommended) and went to see it. We thank the Falls View Park volunteers for helping us fix this hole in our education. Visited in early June 2014, early afternoon. Visit took about 2 hours, in light rain, to see everything and talk to the guide.
The city built a beautiful park overlooking these scenic falls with ample parking across the street. It's a great place to renew yourself and it's just a short drive away. If you're lucky you may see a bald eagle soaring over the falls!
