This is the place my wife and I spent our honeymoon. A time I will never forget. After all these years, the place has not lost its appeal.
Buttermilk Falls is gorgeous. What's even better is climbing the trail up and seeing how far the waterfall goes up. I was so amazed at New York's beauty!! If the weather is nice you can swim at the base of the falls. Be weary about what month you decide to hike up the falls. I went in May and it was a little slippery. Worth a day trip to check out. Adjoined is Robert Treman State Park, also another park worthy of checking out!
What's not to love about walking where, no matter which direction you go, you can hear the majestic roar of a waterfall. The walk, whether up the stairs alongside the waterfall, or in the other direction toward the campground and cabins, is fairly steep. And beautiful. We're from Ithaca and enjoy walking our dogs at Buttermilk; it's great exercise -- again, fairly steep, but only a half mile's walk -- and well worth it. Pristine wooded area, fresh air, abounding water, it's lovely all year round. The entirety of the trails, picnic areas, camping and cabins is very well-maintained -- so, head on out!
People swim there, but I cannot recommend it as the water is not treated and some have stated that there are water snakes in the swimming area. The trails are nice, but take physical endurance to take advantage of them so granny and granddaddy will have to sit these trails out. There are not many comfortable places for granny and granddaddy to sit while waiting and minimal concession options.
What a beautiful place to walk! Not hard to maneuver for us senior citizens and so much nature to experience. The falls are truly something to see.
We chose buttermilk falls as our "home" for 5 nights of camping in Ithaca. A gorgeous state park campground for only 10 dollars a night.. You really can't go wrong! Especially since your camping pass gets you in all state parks for free. This was perfect for us as we took advantage of the close proximity to Watkins glen, Taughannock falls, and Robert h. Truman state parks and hiked in all of them. A gorgeous part of the state and lovely hiking trails for all levels!!The campground was basic but clean. Sites were large and well maintained. Since it was after labor day when we visited we were able to pick out our site when we got there. Definitely a bonus. The campground got a little loud on Saturday night with some college kids hanging out but it didn't bother us too much. Bathrooms could have definitely been cleaner, but for the price we will book again in a heart beat!
We walked here from our hotel. It was a great place to stretch our legs. If you want to do the entire trail up the falls allow yourself plenty of time. It is quite a strenuous hike, but well worth it.
Visited when Park in all its Autumnal glory. A nice sunny day. Took the left side rim trail which wasn't very exciting as not many views of Gorge. But that meant when we did meet up with the stream it was all the more dramatic. Loved the tumbling waterfalls on the walk back down, it is very pretty.
Loved this hike! Exceptional scenery especially with the fall foliage! Be aware it's s good climb down and back up is steeper. Will go back and do this again!
I couldn't believe the beauty of these falls; I've never seen anything like it. One gorgeous waterful after another. Truly breathtaking and a place I would definitely visit more than once.
My wife grew up in Ithaca on Rt. 89 just above Buttermilk. It used to be her "local park" to play in as a child. Now we make at least one journey there every year to "walk the walk" as she puts it. The walk is the hike up the trail along one side of the waterfall hugging the waterfall. It can be strenuous as the first part is hundreds of steps made out of what looks like curbing that give way to a gentle path that sometimes is even with the flowing water, no guard rails, or many feet above swift flowing water. Total length of "the walk" is just over one half mile. When I first visited Buttermilk, my wife took me on a date there, I was spellbound by the waterfall. It is so perfect and beautiful it almost looked fake, hence the Disney reference. The lower park has swimming in the waterfall pool during the summer with very nice picnic grounds with restrooms along the water. There is an upper part also that is larger and has picnic space and shelters for large groups. The hiking trail does continue for over a mile, maybe two plus, to the lake that supplies the water for Buttermilk Falls. If in the Ithaca area you won't be disappointed allotting a couple of hours to "walk the walk" and have a picnic at Buttermilk Falls State Park.
Great place to visit, admire the scene, and excellent photo op. Very close to the city itself. If in Ithaca, a must to see.
Most people check it out from the bottom of the falls, but we normally come from the top. Most of the most interesting pools, etc., are located near the top. Either way, the walk is along a well-groomed walkway (though somewhat slippery at certain times of the year). The walk is good exercise and the views are lovely, with perfectly round pools carved out of the rock river-bottom.
A beautiful state park to walk around with great views and the waterfalls are amazing. I walked all the way up to the top and back down. It is very steep but its worth it if you manage to reach the top. It took us about 45 minutes. Parking is free.
A strenuous but well-worth-it hike up the trail revealed a new view of the waterfalls at each turn in the trail. Got lucky and had a crisp, sunny day, so the light off the water and the leaves made for spectacular scenery.
