Fort Drum is a US Army military reservation and a huge part of it is open to the civilians for recreation. It’s nature at its best with pristine woods, rivers, pond and lakes. They are open for hunting, fishing, wildlife photography, hiking, etc. I was there to fish and caught a trout and some panfish. Some of the waters are stocked . I saw several deer, partridges, and even a black bear while driving around! It probably doesn’t get crowded there since the wildlife did not seem to be scared of people. You do need a NYS fishing or hunting license and addition to following the NYS fishing and hunting regulations Fort Drum has its own regulations. There is a detailed map ( not available online) that you could get from the recreational kiosk on site. It shows the fishing access points and recreational roads that are open to civilian vehicles. Please check their website for directions to the kiosk. You need to get a complimentary Fort Drum Recreational Access pass that’s available online. You also need to call their hotline and provide your pass number every time you enter the area. Some may find his intrusive but this is for your own safety. Note that this is an active US Army training ground so expect to see military personnel and vehicles all around but don’t worry, they will close off certain areas in case it’s not safe for you to be there.
