Experience nature trails, fishing, kayaking and panaoramic views of the mighty Niagara River. Park is free and very accesible by foot.
here's a nice, quiet (usually) getaway on the far north end of Grand Island, truly for naturalists, with some fairly well-marked trails but not much activity... you heed to look hard for the restrooms...
Visiting Buckhorn Island State Park Wildlife Sanctuary on the Fourth of July probably wasn't the best idea I ever had. There was so much boating activity and noise from firecrackers that we didn't see much wildlife ( just a rabbit, 2 garter snakes, some birds, and an unidentified small mammal from a distance). Buckhorn is located at the northern end of Grand Island and consists of 895 acres of marsh, woods, and meadow. There are 2 creeks that run through it. There are also trails. It is a dawn to dusk park with no fee but also no restrooms. We did not stay long but plan on returning soon to continue our explorations. One can hike, bike, kayak, canoe, fish, and (in winter) cross-country ski.
