Overall I have serious safety concerns. Are there any minimum NY state standards which a ski mountain must meet?1. The ski school allows children as young as 4 to ride the chair lift with strangers as part of the ski school program (also a 5 year old boy fell off the chair lift in Dec 2014).2. The Little Colonel ski school does not have a formal check in / check out procedure for children. I did not feel safe leaving my child among 40 other kids in the Little Colonel program. Many parents leave to ski but why on earth would I leave my kid unsupervised and monitored among random strangers and passers-by for 2 hours?3. There is a lot of old rusty equipment at the base of the mountain. Seems like an unnecessary risk to physical safety.4. There are exposed metal pipes on the slopes, particularly near the large rope tow lift. My 4 year son narrowly missed one. It was a heart stopping moment (and yes he wears a helmet!). You just have to have a look around and you will see many other safety issues!
The Girl/Boy scouts rented Willard Mountain for a night of tubing. Everyone from little kids to the adults had a great time. The staff was very friendly and made sure the warming stations, inside and out, were always stoked. They even made Smores! A special shout out for the two gentleman and one gal that were pushing the tubes to start them up top. They went above and beyond to make sure we all had "a sweet ride" !! Judging by the treatment we received, I feel that the service would be the same no matter when you went.
Its a local, friendly ski mountain which serves kids, teen, and local adults who want someplace closer than the larger Vt and Adk places. It's good at teaching, and the terrain is surprisingly varied. But its smaller than the big mountains, so experienced skiiers will run out of challenege after a few hours. Plus they ski at night. Overall: great if you're in the area or looking for a few hours on the slopes.
We enrolled our child into Little Colonel program and experience was very dissapointing. They had about 40 kids on the little 30 ft slope and each kid could do 3-4 runs in an hour. When we tried to bring kid to another learning slope, they told us in a very rude form to get off the sope.
The Learn To Ski Program is absolutely wonderful! I learned to ski there when I was in high school and now my 2 children are taking lessons for the 2nd and 3rd year...they are 4 and 7! They really make it fun for the kids and teach them to stay in control.
