First things first, the home itself is well worth visiting. FDR was a bit of a pack rat, so it is interesting to see all of his knickknacks. The home is lovely and seeing how FDR handled his disability is eye-opening. But our tour guide was just terrible. It took our group 30-45 minutes to move from the visitor center lobby (where the tour begins) to the house itself. This was true even though we visited in the wintertime and it was around 30 degrees. Multiple people expressed annoyance at having to stand outside for mediocre anecdotes while our ears froze off. Once inside the house, we were given enough time to look around, but more time would have been appreciated since we had a relatively large group. Overall, the home is interesting and worth visiting.
Our party of four (two adults, two young adult boys) really enjoyed looking at the house and hearing about FDR, but the two are rather separate. You stand around and listen about FDR, then you look at the rooms on your own; I felt like we could have done all of the speaking part of the tour without ever going to the house - meaning, the talk wasn't much about the house. That being said, the home was very nice, it felt like you were entering someone's home, not like a museum.
I loved the history of this great president and his accomplished wife. Too bad I had a self important guide who thought he was the star.
To me, this is one of those "must visit" attractions whenever you are in Hudson Valley area. Especially if you like history, then this is it for you. See the movie "Hyde Park On Hudson" with Bill Murray so you will have more ideas! I have been here several times over the years simply because everytime someone visits me (including some from overseas) I always take them here. The setting of the ground itself is also nice and worth touring. It is never crowded, plenty of parking, easy in and out. I sometimes take rt 9-G detour for a different scenery. Vanderbilt mansion is nearby.
Excellent trove of history, facts & artifacts. Excellent addition to FDR library & Val-Kill - the Eleanor Roosevelt Cottage.
The life and times are thoroughly presented here. The National Park Service employees and volunteers are knowledgeable, friendly and professional.
Great learning experience for entire family. Beautiful area, small group tour of house, park like setting of grounds
A nice visit through national and NY political history with one of our most famous presidents. It is a good historic visit.
really fun to see, historic. The only thing was there wasn't a cap on tour size so a little time was spent with the guide/ranger and some time on our own.
The "mansion" was more of a large home. Unfortunately, the entry and part of the downstairs was kept in such darkness that we had trouble seeing anything. We visited in the height of autumn, so the grounds were spectacular as were the vistas (although it's hard to see the Hudson River for all the trees).
After dining at Culinary Institute of America, we took a tour of the beautiful and historic home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It was like going back in time to see the photos and memoribilia of this president and his family. Rooms were recreated just as they were including the wheel chair he used at his desk. Beautiful grounds. It's a historic sight you should not miss.
Get a tour and re-learn all that you forgot about the King and Queen's visit. Churchill and FDR. Mrs. Delano and her peculiarities. Eleanor's place in the family home. FDR's bird, nautical, and cartoon collections. It's such a treat!
On our last day in New York, we had plenty of time before we needed to head back to JFK, giving us the opportunity to visit the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, located only about half an hour by car from where we were staying in Fishkill.Tickets for a guided tour and entrance to the museum are $18, and are valid for 48 hours, which is useful if you’re staying nearby and want to return to see things you didn’t have time for on the first day. That wasn’t an option for us. Tickets for the library and museum only are available for $9, but you might as well buy the joint ticket unless you’re really not interested in seeing FDR’s home.Tours are guided by a park ranger and last about 90 minutes, most of which time is spent inside FDR’s home. Our guide was knowledgeable, very animated, and did a great job. I did take a picture of her, but unfortunately don’t remember her name.During the tour we stopped to see FDR's ice yachts, walked by the entrance to the library and museum, paused at the rose garden where he and Eleanor Roosevelt are buried, and then entered his home.Inside FDR's home we saw his living room and dining room, the elevator with his wooden wheelchair, his boyhood bedroom, rooms used by royalty and numerous visiting dignitaries, and his and Eleanor's bedrooms. The tour ends when you leave the house, at which point you’re free to return to roam the grounds or enter the library and museum for a self-guided tour.
We saw the sign for this on our way to NYC and decided to check it out since we recently watched The Roosevelts: An Intimate History on PBS. The visitor center is very nicely done. We recommend the tour of the house. It was interesting to see how FDR lived especially after being struck with polio. Also the relationship he had with his mother is apparent in the way the bedrooms are set up. If you're into history at all, it's an interesting pitstop.
We were visiting Fishkill, NY and we were told that Hyde Park was about 1/2 hour away. Our flight at JFK wasn't until 6:00, so we decided to take a detour to see the home and library/ museum of FDR, the only President to have served 4 terms in office. There's different packages you can get, but you can only take a guided tour of the inside of the house. The museum can be done independently, and at your own leisure. The tour of the house took about an hour, and then you were allowed to roam the grounds. FDR and Eleanor are buried to the right of the house (or left of the museum). Don't miss it as you walk back to the museum. If you're pressed for time, I would say take the tour, and skip the museum for next time. We took the 12:30 tour, and saw about 40% of the museum. We left at 2:30 and arrived at JFK with time to top off our tank, and take the AirTrain.
