Come and learn some history-the Erie Canal powered many factories-right through this manmade, hand-hewn cave. Do the haunted cave around Halloween!
Great activity, fun and educational. Would be a good thing to do in conjunction with the Erie Canal Locks Cruise.
I had no idea that Lockport had caves! But a visitor wanted to go see something unique and so away we went. It was an appropriate length tour for how much there was to see. Our guide was incredible and knew every single detail and answered tons of questions. I'd recommend it even if you're local so you learn more of our history.
to visit and discover, There are so many things to see ... we spent a pleasant time in the cave while enjoying our surroundings
I was born and lived in Lockport most of my life and it took me 45 years to discover this jewel that Lockport has to offer. It explains a lot about the early years of Lockport and you get to experience it first hand. This is a great family activity and everyone should do this!
visited here with our tow teen sons. Enjoyed the tour guide who was very interesting telling the history of the cave. Wet and dark environment. But if yo like history this is a great experience.
We Usually stay around Niagara Falls N.Y. and decided to go over to Lockport (1/2 hr. drive) and check out the Historic Erie Canal. Kind of a drizzly day so we visited the Museum in Lockport. Very interesting place with history of the Erie Canal. Families will enjoy it. The Whole Town of Lockport is Historic and buildings are photographic. You can walk down the Erie Canal on hard trails.(I'm sure you can bike these trails also). We ended up taking the Cave and underground boat ride. My wife and I went by ourselves but families with older children (4 and up) loved it also. There is a bit of walking and stair climbing, but nothing strenuous. Tour Guide Richard was very informative and a riot to be with. Several stops on the way to ask questions and we were invited to ask at anytime. I guarantee you will love this side trip. Bring your cameras or camera phones. Once you enter the cave it may be a little spooky for the younger ones as some (me included) made Ghost sounds. It is not completely dark as the way is dimly lit. Ends in a boat ride in the man made caves that were made by the kids long ago. Tour office has water and pop etc. You are in the middle of Lockport so food etc. is close. Parking is free.
It was a HOT summer day and the caves were cool in temperature- they were okay - a little creepy, a little crowded and scary- walking alongside a tunnel of water on dimly lit narrow paths to a small boat that goes forward and back...it was cool enough- the history is awesome!
Have comfy shoes because there's a lot of walking. Wasn't hard, tho and being a cave, it was dark. We had a fun, knowledgable tour guide who kept us interested & invited questions. Would highly recommend this if you like history
This tour was something different since the cave itself is man made. The guide did an excellent job and was very knowledgeable about the cave, Lockport history and the history of the Erie Canal locks. The short boat ride at the end was fun! There is a lot of walking on this tour and climbing stairs, but we weren't rushed in any way. I would think children would enjoy this informative tour. If you're in the Niagara area, we would definitely recommend this tour!
The guide made the tour very interesting and the boat ride was different...this is a man made cave so dont expect fantastic cave formations....just was interesting from an historic angle. There is quite a lot of walking but lots of stops...quite a lot of steps at the end but tour is over by then so can take your time
About 15 miles from downtown Niagara Falls, USA is the Lockport Cave and underground boat ride on the Erie canal. The guide takes you through a 1700+ foot water power tunnel blasted out of solid rock. The tunnel was the invention of Birdsill Holly, whose inventions were manufactured using the water power from the tunnel. The guide takes you into the tunnel and then there is a short boat ride along the tunnel and back. A very interesting trip. Not scary - kids would enjoy it. Website - www.lockportcave.com
I finally checked out the Cave & Underground boat ride. I have lived here all my life, finally did it. I should have done this a long time ago. Its lots of FUN!! Very informative too. Lots of history of the Erie Canal and Lockport. It is a walking tour for the most part, be prepared to do stairs and a slight incline. But its worth it if you can do it.The boat ride is at the end of the tour, its dark & you get 'kissed' while in the cave. The cave does drip, they call it being kissed-so enjoy all the kissing! Our tour guide was wonderful, funny & explained the history & stories of Lockport very clearly.I hope to go back & do the Haunted tour of the caves in October.
Nice tour of the old tunnel used to give power to three factories built above it back in the late 1800s. It is a walking tour and on the way to the underground man made cave we were able to catch the lock opening and a boat coming through the canal. The guide wasn't the most excited, almost seemed bored that he had to do another tour, yet he knows his information and I did learn plenty about the cave. The boat ride is the highlight of the tour I think, it is only about 7 minutes total but was pretty cool. I don't know if children would like the tour but it was interesting to me.
My husband and I were on vacation in Niagara Falls and decided to make the drive over to Lockport to check out the cave tour. It is mainly a walking tour but it is very leisurely with several stops along the way. The tour guide was funny and did an excellent job answering questions. Was definitely worth checking out. Learned a lot about Lockport and the Erie Canals history.
