These gardens are sequestered in a serene pocket in the hills. The walking tour of the grounds circles a small, private lake. Innisfree specializes in "pocket gardens," small, landscaped groupings of trees and flowers arranged to create idyllic vignettes. The original landscape architect was influenced by formal English and Japanese gardens as well as the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley. I have visited three times during different seasons and have always found an enchanting variety of flora and fauna.
185 acres surrounding a large, shimmering lake - this place is lovely and peaceful. Highly recommend everyone visit this amazing place. Check out the website for more information.
This place is amazing. We went on Sunday morning and spent almost two hours enjoying the place. If we had more time and it was warmer, I would have spent all day. YOu can bring food and just hang out in this beautiful place all day. it is a must see if you're in the area. Amazing, amazing.
I went to this garden having just recently heard of it and it has been there for 50 years! What a wonderful place. I strolled its beautiful gardens and it took about 2 1/2 hours for me to explore its many areas. Unlike an 'Olmsted Garden' which constructs vast vistas for you to see... the theory proposed here is having 'little experiences'. By that I mean, small vignettes that you have to go up to to experience. Both concept in landscape architecture are wonderful for sure but this is a special place to experience the second type. There are many areas which let you experience water...dripping, gushing, tumbling and laid out still! There is a beautiful lake which anchors the grounds. The compositions of rocks which are artfully places all around the site, are truly amazing. The plantings are also both informal and formal (in one section) and the variety of unusual plants was wonderful to see. The Ginkgo trees that were clipped were nothing that I have ever seen before. You will not find a single Holly for instance but the trees that you will find, will delight you. There are many wooden chairs around the property for you to rest on but there is only one Port-a-Potty facility which is in the parking lot. The fee was $6 for your entrance which provided you with a lovely booklet for your self-guided tour. There is no signage except for caution notices so you have to study the plan to really understand where you are and what you are seeing but that can be accomplished easily. I completely enjoyed my visit which was on a 'Chamber of Commerce' Fall day!
In the middle of our contemporary frenetic lives this is a great spot to slow down and drink in the serenity that innisfree has to offer. Don't take my word for it go and see this beauty.
A very large park/garden. Paths to walk on, benches to sit on, picnic tables to eat on. Yates wrote a poem about Innisfree. Waterfalls, trees, herons, ponds, etc. See if you can arrange for a presentation by one of the park workers to learn the history.
We spent about 3 hours walking the grounds of the gardens. Lots to see, very relaxing. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the homemade picnic tables and chairs. They give you a cook let that guides you through the gardens, which is very helpful. Waterfalls, rock displays, even a bog garden!
Innisfree Gardens are so lovely and peaceful! We visited Innisfree for the first time before our wedding 10 years ago and fell in love with it. We decided to come back 10 years later with our second child - and realized all too soon that it was not such a brilliant idea to take our stroller with us! The paths are easy to navigate - but not with a stroller! So we ended up carrying both our child and our stroller which made for one strenuous hike :-) But the gardens were so beautiful, we enjoyed it all the same.
Wonderful way to spend a day! Take a camera and a picnic lunch. Meditate, relax and enjoy the lake and the landscape architecture!
I went out to Innisfree just to do some exploring and take some pictures. I was not prepared for how incredibly beautiful every element of this garden is! With neat little pathways, fountains, rock formations, and natural grace, I was thrilled with every little thing I could see. It is definitely a photographer's and nature lover's dream. I'm going back as soon as I can to explore some more!
What's NOT to love?? Waterfalls, rock formations and walls, bridges, cave, walkways, steps, paths, trees, flowers, wildlife, nice overlook picnic area. Totally worth the $6 entrance fee. Get a Brochure/Map before you start so you can find all of the features. Wear appropriate walking shoes. One downfall: bathroom facilities are extremely primative.
Some gardens are right for plant collectors and some are for design lovers.Innisfree is a garden of peace, tranquility, and pure beauty.Although off the beaten path, it is certainly a top gem of the Hudson River Valley. It is in my all time top 10 destinations. Very highly recommended!!!
I make it a point to visit Innisfree Gardens once a year and I rotate the months. It is open from May to October and each month opens up new vistas and different flowerings. There are many interesting and beautiful water features in addition to the central lake. Children love the little waterfallls and they love to hide in the nooks and crannies formed by the lovely stonework. There is a wonderful grouping of Lotus to be enjoyed while flowering but also later with the impressive seed pods.Food and shops in nearby Millbrook Village - 5 minute drive
As you drive in you probably don't realize this is one of the top gardens in the world. Make sure you pick up a brochure in the box and visit the Garden Core. We were on a Hudson Valley garden tour and had a guided tour!! Amazing!! We only had time for the tour up to the Bog Garden. Needed more time to circle Tyrrel Lake. Must go back!!
The Hudson Valley has many wonderful gardens full of impressive stone boulders, waterfalls, streams, ponds, trees, and flowers. We've been to many of them. Yet when seeing this place we were blown away. Every stone, stream, waterfall, tree, flower, etc that you see was deliberately put in place. The entire landscape looks lush and fully natural -- yet it has all carefully landscaped over a 50 year period. Take the 1.5 mile loop walk around the largest pond and you will find numerous amazing delights. This is based on an 8th century Chinese garden concept -- translated as "cup garden". It works. We'll be back.
