They were most helpful in making my older companion comfortable at getting into a canoe for the first time in her life. We had a nice hour-long paddle - good enough to make her ready to get in a canoe again.

This is not as easy as other reviews and the operators would suggest, and I would caution those inexperienced with small watercraft or who are not sufficiently fit to haul a large, heavy canoe a long distance to think twice. My husband and I rented a canoe for the four-hour paddle. Staff seemed pretty cavalier and instructions were casual. Reviews sounded great so we packed camera, food etc. We are not newbies to canoes. The trip is mostly insanely easy--but there are tough parts that come without warning. We ended up upside down in the river and it took help from other kind boaters to regain what we could. Camera was a major loss. Strong current, large rock, no warnings following a prolonged quiet stretch. This was distressing, but we got past it--and were stunned by the extreme difficulty of the portage, which required that we maneuver through knee-deep sucking mud and over rocks and roots--this is a heavily used portage route that desperately needs extreme maintenance. Had we not opted for the optional canoe wheels we would probably not have been able to manage. At the end of this the put-in was also difficult. The kayakers traveling behind us expressed astonishment at the condition of the trail.90% of the trip is insanely, deceptively easy, but things can go wrong in a split second. I fault the operators for not warning us of the difficulty of the portage and what to look out for along the way. We enjoyed most of the trip but regret not being better prepared. Yes, it's a beautiful trip, but for us it was marred by a preventable incident and a bruising portage, thus I cannot in good conscience give it any more than three stars.Do not wear anything you value or take valuables without a float bag. Be forewarned.

I stayed at Nick's Lake campground and rented a kayak from Tickner's. They come to the campground with paddles and lifevests and the kayak was at the beach so it was very convenient. The staff was so nice and for $20 I had the kayak for the entire day. I will definitely rent from them again.

Had a great time canoeing with the family, spent over an hour on Moose river and the staff made it easy! Good price too, $8 per hour.

Highly recommend. If you are in Old Forge add this to your to do list. Family affordable fun is hard to come by these days, take advantage of this great trip! I Called in advance they were very friendly. Did the 4 hour canoe trip down the river. Staff gave us instructions at their location and again at the drop off (about 5 min) by van ride. Driver was very personable. It was easy to navigate the river and very beautiful and quiet. We only saw 2 other people out there. There is a spot where you need to get out and carry the canoe 300ft, canoe was a bit heavy but we managed and well worth it. The trip was extremely affordable at $43 total. There are several small beaches where you can stop and picnic, pack a lunch and drinks. I Can't believe there is only one other review on here right now. I would do this trip again in a heartbeat and maybe even one of their longer trips!! You can also rent canoes and kayaks by the hour and leave right from their dock if you don't want to commit to the 4 hours. They will give you suggestions on which way on the river to go and how long it will take.

Thanks to Dan Tickner, we had a perfect day on the Moose River. With gorgeous autumn weather on a weekday in the first week of October, we had the river to ourselves, ambling down the Moose with the current. We had only planned for the paddling time of about 4 hours, and regretted it. There were so many beaches that called to us for a picnic or a swim, that we were planning our future, longer trip along the way. This venue offers a very relaxed outing in the natural wilds of the region, and you'll be glad you planned the time to take in the beauty from a sandy shore with some good food, and good friends. Cooling off with a swim break will be bliss for a summer trip. Of course, make sure you have plenty of water, snacks, water shoes, sun hat, etc. Allow for the full day, if you want to leisurely enjoy all that's available to you.If you're looking for a fun, relaxing family outing in the Adirondacks, trust Dan's advice in planning a day. Generous with his helpful support, I highly recommend Tickner's for a great day on quiet water.
