A friend and I visited the Cooperstown area in August 2013 (the earliest option I could list below was Dec 2013, but we were there in Aug 2013). We had a great time attending the Ommengang Beer Festival, seeing the Baseball Hall of Fame, and visiting several breweries and wineries in the area. We camped at Glimmerglss State Park, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. We had planned to rent a boat and do a little fishing on Lake Otswego. But as we were visiting one of our favorite places there, the Wellington Market, the owners told us about a friend he went to high school with who ran a canoe and kayak rental place down in Portlandville. It was associated with a smaller lake, so we decided to check it out. We could not have been happier with our decision! They were great people to deal with, very friendly; had a great conversation with the owner! They also sell new and used kayaks, canoes, and other equipment. They are a small business giving great, friendly service, and I highly reccommend them if you are in the area!
If you are in Portlandville then a visit to Canoe & Kayak's is a must! We rented a two man canoe and rowed down the Goodyear Lake for about 3 miles. It was a great day and lots of fun. The staff were so nice and friendly they set us up in no time at all and we were on our way. Its a great place to go and just spend time on the lake. Rates are very reasonable!
We rented about 8 canoes and kayaks from Brent and the crew at Canoe and Kayak Rental and they were great. They helped us get them to the Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley RR in Milford where the very cooperative train crew loaded them on a flat bed. Then we rode the train north from Milford to a great spot to canoe down the Susquehanna river back to a spot near the station. Brent came and picked up all or boats. They were very helpful and made the whole trip possible. Be sure to call ahead if you think this was worth doing.
